Why the leveler gets its own page

The dock leveler is the piece of equipment a forklift actually drives across. When it fails, the bay is out of service even if the door works perfectly. Levelers also fail differently from doors: hydraulic units may show fluid or pressure symptoms, mechanical units may show spring or hold-down symptoms, air-powered units may show bag or blower symptoms, and edge-of-dock units may show impact symptoms. If you know which kind you have, mention it when you call; you can call without identifying the equipment, and the repair company determines the diagnosis.

The four common types are pit-mounted mechanical levelers (pull chain, spring-lifted), pit-mounted hydraulic levelers (push button, hydraulic cylinders and a power unit), air-powered levelers (push button, an inflatable bag raises the deck) and edge-of-dock levelers (a short lip bolted to the dock face). Vertical-storing levelers and specialty units exist too; if you have one, say so when you call.

Common dock leveler problems

Most leveler calls describe one of the following. None of them should be worked around with blocks, plates or a forklift propping the deck.

• Deck will not raise, or raises very slowly: a repair company may evaluate the pump, motor, lifting spring or air bag, depending on the type.
• Deck drifts down under load or will not hold position: a repair company may evaluate the valves, cylinder or mechanical hold-down.
• Lip will not extend, or will not fold back: a repair company may evaluate the lip spring, hinge, cylinder or keeper.
• Leveler pops up when the forklift crosses it: a repair company may evaluate the hold-down or ratchet before the equipment is used.
• Hydraulic fluid in the pit: a repair company may evaluate the hose, fitting, seal and cylinder.
• Pull chain does nothing or takes excessive force: a repair company may evaluate the spring and release mechanism.
• Safety legs or toe guards damaged, bumpers missing, or the deck visibly bent: impact damage that needs inspection before use.

How the service connection works for levelers

Not every commercial door company works on levelers, and leveler work requires pit access and, for hydraulic and air units, electrical and fluid knowledge. Each active service area identifies the equipment information and call path available for dock leveler work. A direct-provider page names the company that accepts the work; a shared request-line page does not imply that a provider has accepted it.

What the repair company will ask about a leveler

Which bay, what type of leveler (mechanical, hydraulic, air or edge-of-dock), what the deck and lip are doing, whether there is fluid in the pit, and whether a trailer is at the dock. A brand or model already known or safely visible can help. Do not approach damaged equipment, enter a pit, reach under a raised deck, or operate equipment to collect information. Also mention whether the leveler is in a refrigerated or wash-down environment.

Ask the company how it handles diagnosis versus repair, whether it can service the leveler brand you have, and how the work is charged. Uptime is not involved in those terms.

Included and not included

Included: pit-mounted mechanical, hydraulic and air-powered levelers, edge-of-dock levelers, lip and hinge assemblies, hydraulic power units, hoses and cylinders, control stations, safety legs, toe guards and leveler bumpers, subject to what the market's company accepts. Not included: residential or portable ramps, yard ramps and mobile dock boards unless a local page lists them, concrete pit reconstruction, and parts-only orders.
