Which kind of leveler do you have?
A dock leveler is an installed bridge between the dock and a trailer bed. Its deck and lip accommodate height differences within the unit's specified range. You do not need to know which kind you have to call — but a type you already know helps describe the equipment.
A known nameplate might say Rite-Hite, Kelley, Serco, Blue Giant, Nordock or Pentalift. These manufacturers make dock equipment; naming them does not imply a dealer relationship or that a provider accepts every model. Use existing records or a label already safely visible, not a trip into the pit.
Two things describe a leveler, and they describe different features. How it moves is one thing: hydraulic, mechanical or air-powered. Where it sits is another: in a pit, on the dock face, or storing upright. They are separate questions. An edge-of-dock leveler can be mechanical or hydraulic. Vertical-storing describes where the deck parks, not what drives it.

This is not a dock plate or a dock board
A dock plate or dock board is a portable bridge, rather than an installed leveler. Its handling method and permitted traffic depend on the model; a forklift is not appropriate for every plate or board.
MHI puts it plainly: portable dock leveling devices are commonly called dock boards or dock plates. Dock boards are typically designed to withstand heavy-duty loads imposed by material handling equipment, while dock plates are typically used in lighter-duty hand loading or hand-truck applications. What drives the price on a leveler repair?
We can't quote your exact leveler repair from a web page. The price depends on the mechanism, the fault, parts, and access. Here's what to ask before you authorize work.
What moves the number:
- Mechanism. The lifting and holding systems differ between hydraulic, mechanical and air-powered units.
- Hydraulic components versus springs. A cylinder, pump or valve job is different from a spring job.
- Lip and lip-hinge work. A common repair, and a common place for extra labor if the hinge is bent.
- Structural damage to the deck or frame. Cracked welds change the whole conversation.
- Pit access and condition. A wet, blocked or shallow pit changes the visit.
- Parts availability. Older and discontinued models can mean a parts search, lead time or replacement. Any repair part must suit the model and manufacturer requirements.
- Diagnostic and travel charges, and whether the dock has to stay live during the work.
Ask before you authorize: is this visit diagnostic or repair; what is the estimate actually for; who signs off on extra work and when; are the parts in stock; is anything here temporary; and who holds the license for any electrical part of the job.
Repair or replace?
Factors, not a verdict: age against the traffic the dock actually runs; whether the deck, frame or welds are structurally damaged; whether parts are still available for that model; whether the trailer mix has outgrown the unit's range; and whether a retrofit can reuse the existing pit. A retrofit that reuses the pit is a very different budget from one that does not.

The safety standards behind dock leveling equipment
These are reference points for the questions worth asking. None of them decides what applies to your dock.
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.26, "Dockboards." It addresses intended loads, runoff protection, portable-device securing and prevention of transport-vehicle movement. Its runoff requirement for devices initially placed in service on or after January 17, 2017 has an exception when the employer demonstrates no runoff hazard. Its alternative to securing a portable dockboard also requires an employer demonstration that securing is infeasible. These are specific conditions, not permission to improvise with a damaged device. Georgia rules that touch leveler work
For a facility inside Atlanta city limits, start with the Office of Buildings. Describe whether the job is equipment repair, a replacement, new power or a change to the pit/opening; ask which building or technical permit applies. A postal Atlanta address outside the city needs its actual municipal or county authority.
Loading dock equipment is a named specialty trade. Georgia's State Licensing Board for Residential and General Contractors lists Loading Dock Equipment among its Traditional Specialty Contractors, so work inside that specialty does not require the residential or general contractor license. Dock leveler questions
Is a dock leveler the same service call as the dock door?
Usually the same call, but they are different equipment. The door closes the opening. The leveler bridges the gap to the trailer. If both are affected, say so — it changes what parts the technician brings.
Can a damaged dock plate be repaired?
A portable dock plate or board is a different device under a different standard, and whether it can be repaired at all depends on the manufacturer's own information for that model and that damage. Do not assume a weld puts it back in service. Full answer here.
How do I know if mine is hydraulic or mechanical?
Rough rule: a push button usually means hydraulic or air-powered, and a pull chain you walk down usually means mechanical. It is only a rough rule, and "not sure" is a perfectly fine answer on the call.
Do you do the concrete work in the pit?
No. Pit, slab and dock-face concrete is a different trade. A provider can tell you if concrete damage is affecting the leveler, but the concrete itself is a separate scope.
