Is it a plate, a board, or an installed leveler?
This is the single most useful thing to settle before you call, because the three are different equipment with different rules — and people use the same words for all of them.
A dock leveler is installed equipment: a hinged steel deck built into the dock floor or bolted to the dock face, with a lip that folds out onto the trailer bed. It stays with the building. A portable dock plate or dock board is a loose metal bridge you set down and pick up. It can move between locations rather than staying fixed to the dock.
The standards bodies separate them too. The material-handling industry's standards for this equipment are published through MHI's Loading Dock Equipment Manufacturers group: ANSI MH30.1, Design, Testing, and Utilization of Dock Leveling Devices covers installed units, while ANSI MH30.2, Design, Testing, and Utilization of Portable Dock Leveling Devices covers the portable ones (MHI standards catalogue). One thing worth saying flatly: a damaged portable plate or board is not automatically a welding job. Do not assume a bent or cracked portable device can be repaired, returned to service, or driven on by a forklift because it looks solid. Its rating, the manufacturer's instructions, and its actual condition govern that — not its appearance, and not its name.
Hydraulic, mechanical or air — and why the answer is optional
Two different things get called "leveler types," and mixing them up causes confusion on the phone. Mechanism is how it is powered. Configuration is where and how it is mounted. A unit has one of each.
Mechanism:
- Hydraulic — hydraulic power raises the deck; lip operation depends on the model. A provider may check the pump, cylinders, hoses, valves and electrical controls.
- Mechanical — a spring-assisted mechanism raises the deck. A provider may check springs, the hold-down, linkage and the lip assist.
- Air-powered — an inflatable bag lifts the deck. A provider may check the bag, blower, ducting and controls.
Configuration: pit-style (recessed into the dock floor), edge-of-dock (bolted to the dock face for smaller height differences), and vertical-storing (parks upright, common where the door needs to seal to the pit floor). What is the leveler doing?
Describe the behavior. A symptom tells a qualified provider where to look; it does not identify the failed part from a distance, and nobody should go under or into a leveler to find out.

Whatever it is doing: keep people and forklifts clear, do not force the unit, and follow your facility's established process for taking the affected bay out of use. Do not reach under a raised deck, prop it, or attempt to release it manually.
Worth knowing: OSHA's powered industrial truck rule requires that "dockboard or bridgeplates, shall be properly secured before they are driven over" (29 CFR 1910.178(n)(11)), and that brakes be set and wheel blocks in place to prevent trucks, trailers or railcars from moving while loading or unloading (1910.178(m)(7)). Those are employer duties about how the bay is used — not a repair instruction, and not something a damaged leveler satisfies.
What to say when you call
Location, bay, behavior. That is all it takes to start.

Know which number you are being given. A diagnostic fee pays for the visit and assessment — ask if it credits. A starting price is a floor. A scoped fixed price covers named work; ask what happens if the deck turns out to be cracked. An estimate is an approximate price and may follow an inspection. A quote should state its scope, price, exclusions and validity; the written terms govern.
Ask outright: Is the diagnostic separate and credited? Does this cover the full repair or a first visit? Are parts included? What is the lead time if something has to be ordered? Can the bay be used in the meantime, or should it stay out of service? Are there after-hours rates? If structural damage is found, what happens to this price?
The independent company that accepts the work sets its own prices and terms. Ask whether it services your leveler type and can document the fault, the proposed repair, and the checks before the bay returns to use.
Repair it, or replace it?
Repair usually holds when the fault is a defined component — a cylinder, a hose, a spring, a lip assist, a control — the deck and frame are sound, and parts are still supported for the unit.
Replacement starts to make sense when the deck or structural members are cracked or deformed; the unit has been repaired repeatedly for the same cause; the leveler is undersized for the trailers or the forklift traffic it now sees; parts are obsolete; or the pit itself needs work and the unit has to come out anyway.
The capacity question is the one people skip. A leveler is rated for a specific load, and the rating has to account for the forklift plus its load plus the operator, not just the pallet weight. If you have changed forklifts, changed products, or increased throughput since the leveler went in, the honest question is whether the unit was ever specified for what you are doing now. Structural pit or slab work is outside this service either way. If replacement is the answer and the pit needs rebuilding, expect two trades and sequence them deliberately.
Planned dock maintenance
A dock leveler is not a garage door, and a commercial door maintenance contract does not automatically cover it. Planned service on installed leveling equipment is its own scope, and worth writing down before anyone signs.
What a useful provider-performed leveler PM scope covers: cleaning the pit — debris and standing water can accelerate wear; inspection for cracked welds, bent or damaged structural members, worn moving parts, chain and linkage condition; lubrication appropriate to each component; adjustment of main springs, lip assists and linkage; verification that the unit stores and returns properly; and a written record for each unit, by bay.
Two questions that separate a real program from a visit: ask what frequency is being recommended and on what basis — trailer throughput, shift count and environment differ enormously between a two-bay shop and a 40-door DC. And ask what you receive afterward: a per-bay report naming findings and proposed actions is useful; "we serviced your docks" is not.

What is the difference between a dock plate and a dock leveler?
A dock leveler is installed equipment that stays with the building — a hinged deck and lip built into the dock floor or bolted to the dock face. A dock plate is a loose portable bridge you set down and lift away. They are covered by separate industry standards for exactly that reason, and they are repaired, rated and replaced differently. The leveler is down. Can we use a portable plate instead?
Only after your facility's qualified safety or equipment personnel confirm the specific device, condition, fit, securing and intended traffic are suitable. A plate meant for pallet jacks is not a forklift bridge because you need it to be. Check the device's own rating and the manufacturer's instructions, and treat the failed leveler's bay as out of service in the meantime.
Do I need to know if it's hydraulic or mechanical before calling?

The deck sags when a forklift crosses. Is that normal?
