Is this the leveler, the door, or a plate?
Three different things sit at a loading bay and people mix them up constantly. A description helps the receiving company identify the right scope. You can call without the equipment name.
- The door is the thing across the opening. If the door won't open, close or move, that's a door call. → Loading dock and dock door repair or commercial overhead door repair
- The leveler is installed in the dock floor or at the dock edge. Its deck and lip bridge between the dock and trailer; pit, edge-of-dock and vertical-storing designs have different layouts. It isn't a portable plate. That's this page.
- A dock plate or dock board is portable. Its manufacturer specifies the handling method; being portable does not mean it can be lifted by hand or used by a forklift. It is not part of the building. → Dock plates and boards
That last distinction matters more than it sounds. OSHA's definition of dockboard is broad enough to take in bridge plates, dock plates and dock levelers all together (OSHA §1910.21). The ANSI standards keep them apart — MH30.1-2022 covers installed dock leveling devices and MH30.2-2022 covers portable ones (MHI MH30 listing). Both checked September 18, 2026. So a phrase that lumps them together in one rule can send someone to the wrong conclusion about whether a damaged item can still be used.
Dock leveler repair: which kind is at your bay?
You don't have to know. "Bay 6, the leveler won't come up" is a complete report. This table is here for the times when knowing shortens the call.

Manufacturer identification examples include Rite-Hite, Kelley, Serco, Blue Giant, Nordock and Pentalift. Read one out only if it is already safely visible, or use an existing record. Don't approach the failed equipment. It's an identification help — not a claim about what's installed at your building, or who's authorized to service it.
One thing worth knowing: the drive type and the storage style are separate facts. A vertical-storing leveler can also be hydraulic. You don't have to fit it into one box.
What's it doing? Symptoms and what a provider checks
Describe what the deck and lip are doing. Don't go into the pit, don't reach under a raised deck, and don't try to make it move for the sake of the call.

If a leveler has failed, keep people and forklifts off it, take the bay out of use through your facility's normal process, and don't drive over a deck or plate that just failed. Nobody should be climbing into a pit or reaching under a raised deck to read a label or look for the problem. You don't need that information to call.
How the leveler fits with the rest of the dock
A leveler doesn't work alone, and sometimes what feels like a leveler problem started somewhere else.
- Bumpers set how far the trailer stops from the dock face. When a bumper is crushed or missing, intended standoff and impact protection may be lost. → Dock bumpers, seals and shelters
- Seals and shelters close the gap around the trailer. They don't affect the leveler mechanically, but they share the same opening. → Dock seals and shelters
- Vehicle restraints hold the trailer against the dock. On many docks the restraint is interlocked with the leveler, so a restraint fault can stop the leveler from operating even though the leveler is fine. → Trailer and vehicle restraint repair

If the leveler won't run and the restraint light is showing something odd, mention both. It helps the provider decide what systems to include.

- You describe it. Where the facility is, which bay, and what the deck or lip is doing.
- Your request may be shared. Calls may be shared with an independent commercial dock-and-door repair company.
- That company takes it from there. They confirm whether they can serve the address, what they can do, when, and what they charge — plus their own contract, work and warranty terms. If you reach voicemail, leave the facility address, the door or dock number if known, what's wrong, and a callback number.
Useful to have, not required
The bay number. Whether a trailer is in the bay right now. Whether it's hydraulic, mechanical, air-powered or edge-of-dock, if you happen to know. How many bays are affected. Any existing service record. The brand, only from an existing record or label already safely visible. Don't approach the pit or failed equipment to read it.
Call without any of it if you need to. The facility address, the bay number and "the leveler won't come up" are enough.

What affects the price, and repair versus replacement
We can't quote your exact leveler repair from a web page. The price depends on the mechanism, the fault, parts, and access. Here's what to ask before you authorize work.
Ask whether there's a diagnostic or service-call charge and whether it comes off the repair. Ask whether travel is separate. Ask what the estimate covers and how additional work gets approved once someone can actually see inside the pit — which, with a leveler, is often where the real scope shows up.

Repair or replace? It usually comes down to the condition of the frame and deck, whether parts still exist for that model, and how the bay is used now compared to when the leveler was installed. Be careful with capacity: a leveler's rated capacity belongs to the manufacturer and the actual installation. It is not something to estimate from a web page or from how the deck looks. If your loads have gotten heavier, say so and let the provider take it to the manufacturer's information.
The safety standards under a dock leveler
OSHA §1910.26 requires dockboards to be capable of supporting the maximum intended load, and addresses run-off protection, securing portable devices, protection against the transport vehicle moving, and safe handling. The exceptions matter as much as the rule. Note the wording: it calls for measures such as chocks or sand shoes to prevent the vehicle moving — not a closed list of two — and portable devices need handholds or other means for safe handling. OSHA §1910.178 covers powered industrial trucks, including provisions that bear on trucks crossing dockboards and entering trailers. The employer applies the full rule to its own operation.
On the standards side, MHI's public MH30 listing separates MH30.1-2022 for installed dock leveling devices from MH30.2-2022 for portable ones. Those categories describe equipment scope. They don't by themselves establish what's legally required at your facility, and the manufacturer's instructions for the actual installation still govern. All checked September 18, 2026.
On permits: tell the issuing office whether the work is a mechanical repair, a replacement, changed anchorage or pit structure, or new controls/wiring. Houston Building Code Enforcement includes repairs among regulated work. Harris Fire Code §105.1.5 has a limited ordinary-repair exception under that fire code, not an exemption from every permit. Dock leveler questions from Houston facilities
How do I know if we have a hydraulic, mechanical or air-powered leveler?
Use an existing record or what you remember from normal operation. A mechanical leveler may have a pull-chain release; powered units can be hydraulic or air-powered, so a wall button alone does not identify the drive. Edge-of-dock describes mounting and vertical-storing describes storage. Don’t pull a chain, walk a deck down, approach the pit or run a failed unit to identify it. “The leveler won’t come up” is enough to start.
The lip comes out but the deck won't hold — can we keep using the bay?
Take the affected bay out of service through your facility’s normal process and keep people and forklifts off the failed equipment. Report unexpected dropping, sagging or loss of support without testing it under load. Normal movement that follows trailer height is different; a qualified provider checks the actual failure before the bay returns to use.
Do I need a permit to repair a dock leveler in Houston or Harris County?
The work and address decide it. Houston’s permit guidance includes repairs, and Harris County’s ordinary-repair exception applies under its fire code rather than every permit program. Ask specifically about mechanical work, controls/wiring and any changed pit structure or anchorage.
Is a dock plate the same thing as a dock leveler?
No, and this is the distinction most worth getting right. A leveler is built into the dock and stays there. A dock plate or board is portable — you can move it. They have different ratings, and a portable plate that's bent, cracked or gouged should not be assumed repairable or safe for a forklift just because it looks solid.
