Is it an installed dock leveler, a dock plate, or a dock board?
This is the first thing worth sorting out, because the equipment changes the repair scope and cost. Installed dock levelers, often called dock ramps, stay at the bay; portable plates and boards can be moved between locations.
An installed dock leveler is part of the building. It sits in a pit in the dock floor, or bolts to the dock face, it is hinged, and it is operated in place. A dock plate and a dock board are portable — you set them down between the dock and the trailer and pick them back up.
They are not the same product and they do not carry the same traffic. Bluff Manufacturing describes its dock plates as "ideal for hand truck and pallet jack traffic," and its steel dock boards as "Rated for forklift use," with capacities of 10,000 to 40,000 lbs (Bluff dock boards and dock plates). Have the provider check the unit’s rating and manufacturer sizing guidance against the intended traffic and total load — not just the load on the forks. MHI identifies portable plates and boards with ANSI MH30.2 and installed levelers with ANSI MH30.1 (MHI LODEM).
One thing we will not assume: that a bent or cracked portable plate can be welded and put back under traffic. Bluff’s replacement guidance identifies cracks, warping and detached curbs as reasons to replace its plates and boards. Take a damaged portable unit out of service through your facility's normal process and have it assessed. The full answer lives on dock equipment repair.
What kind of leveler is this?
The mechanism decides the parts, the fault list and the price, so it is the most useful thing to know. Describe how it is normally operated, or use equipment records you already have. Do not look underneath it to identify the mechanism.
| How it is operated, and what you would notice | What it is called | Parts a provider checks | What to say on the call |
|---|---|---|---|
| A pull chain or lever, with a spring and chain underneath the deck | Mechanical pit leveler | Springs, chains, hold-down and ratchet assembly | "It's the pull-chain kind" |
| A push button, with hydraulic equipment identified in the site records | Hydraulic pit leveler | Cylinder seals, hoses, valves, power unit, control | "There's oil in the pit" |
| A push button, with an air bag that inflates under the deck | Air-powered leveler | The bag, the blower, the control | "It's the air-bag type" |
| A small unit bolted to the face of the dock with a short lip | Edge-of-dock leveler, or EOD — a compact leveler mounted on the dock face rather than in a pit, for smaller height differences | Lip, hinge, springs, and the mounting into the dock face | "It's the small one bolted to the front" |
| A deck that stores upright behind the dock door | Vertical-storing leveler | Cylinder, controls, and how it interacts with the door | "It stands up when the door shuts" |
Names you may already be able to see safely: Rite-Hite, Kelley, Serco, Blue Giant, Nordock, Pentalift, Poweramp, McGuire. Those are examples so you can recognize a nameplate — not a claim about what is installed at your building, and not a dealer or authorized-service relationship. Do not climb into a pit or approach a raised leveler to read one.
What should you report when the platform or lip stops working?
Say what changed, which bay is affected, and whether the lip or deck stopped moving normally. A powered leveler can lower onto the trailer as part of normal operation; a provider needs the model and operating state before calling that a fault.
| What it is doing | What a qualified provider inspects | Why it matters | How to say it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Will not raise at all | Mechanism type first, then controls, power unit or spring pack | A bay out of service backs up the whole dock | "Bay 2 won't come up" |
| Drops unexpectedly or will not remain in its stored position | Model, operating state, stored-position supports and lifting mechanism | Unexpected movement needs assessment; normal lowering onto a trailer is different | "The deck drops unexpectedly at bay 2" |
| Will not lower, or sits high | Controls, hold-down release, hydraulics | The intended bridge into the trailer is unavailable | "It's stuck up in the air" |
| Lip will not fold out onto the trailer | Lip assembly, lip-assist mechanism, whether the deck is level | Without the lip there is no safe bridge | "The lip won't come out" |
| Lip will not retract | Lip hinge, return mechanism, debris | The lip can interfere with storing the leveler or closing the door | "The lip won't fold back" |
| Deck will not return to its normal stored position | Lip supports, stored-position mechanism and controls | A deck left below floor level creates an opening in the working surface | "It's sagging in the pit" |
| Fluid on the pit floor | Hoses, fittings, cylinder seals | Loss of hydraulic fluid needs assessment before continued use | "There's oil under bay 2" |
| Loud bang or jolt when it cycles | Chain, spring, cylinder mounting, structural condition of the deck | A new bang or jolt needs inspection | "It bangs hard when it drops" |
| Toe guards damaged or missing | Toe guard condition and mounting | These are there to keep feet out of the gap at the side of the deck | "The side guards are bent" |
| Nothing happens at the button | Controls, power supply, and whether any of that is regulated electrical work | May need a licensed electrical contractor | "The button's dead" |
Safety, kept short. This page does not tell you how to fix a leveler and does not diagnose one. Hydraulics, springs and stored energy in a leveler are inspected by qualified people. Until then: keep people clear of the bay, do not force the equipment, do not rely on a maintenance strut as a repair, and take the bay out of use through your facility's normal process. Do not enter the pit.
What is included in a leveler inquiry, and what belongs elsewhere?
Included: installed dock levelers of every mechanism — mechanical, hydraulic, air-powered, edge-of-dock and vertical-storing — plus their lips, hold-downs, cylinders, power units, springs, controls and toe guards, at commercial buildings.
Not included, and where it belongs:
- The pit itself — concrete, slab and structural repair goes to a concrete or general contractor. We take calls about the equipment in the pit, not the pit. Some companies list concrete ramp work next to leveler repair; it is a different trade and worth separating before you book anything.
- Dock seals, shelters, bumpers, lights and portable plates — dock equipment repair.
- Trailer restraints and dock locks — trailer restraint repair.
- The dock door above it — overhead or roll-up.
- Boat docks and lifts — a marine contractor.
- Parts-only requests — a distributor.
What happens when you call about a failed leveler?
- You describe it. Facility address, bay number, what the leveler is doing.
- The request may be shared with an independent commercial dock-and-door repair company that may be able to serve the facility.
- That company confirms service eligibility, scope, availability, pricing, scheduling, and its own terms.
If you reach voicemail, leave the facility address, the door or dock number if known, what's wrong, and a callback number.
An example of what is enough to say: "The leveler on bay 2 won't stay up at our warehouse in San Antonio, and I can give you the address." That is example wording, not a real job and not a script.
Useful, but not required: the bay number; whether it is the pull-chain, push-button or air type if you already know; whether there is fluid in the pit; whether a trailer is sitting at the bay right now; and how the site is accessed. Call without any of it.
What affects leveler repair cost, and the repair-versus-replacement decision?
We can't quote your exact leveler repair from a web page. The price depends on the mechanism, the fault, parts, and access. Here's what to ask before you authorize work:
- Is there a service-call or diagnostic charge, and does it apply if I don't proceed?
- Is this a standard rate or an after-hours rate?
- Are parts included, and are they in stock or on order?
- Is this a repair, a temporary make-safe, or a replacement?
- What is the warranty on the part, and on the labor?
What moves the number: the mechanism, first and most — mechanical, hydraulic and air-powered levelers have completely different parts lists. Then which component failed; whether the deck or lip is structurally damaged rather than worn; parts availability for that make; whether the pit has to be cleared or the bay taken out of service; whether any control or power work is regulated electrical scope; access and shift constraints; and lead time.
Repair or replace comes down to a few things a provider can see and you probably cannot: the age of the mechanism and whether parts are still made for it, whether the deck or lip is bent or cracked rather than simply worn, whether the pit and mounting are sound, how many cycles that bay actually runs, and whether you have been fixing the same bay repeatedly. Nobody should give you a verdict before looking.
Which company should handle this leveler?
Ask whether the company works on your leveler’s mechanism and make, including its controls and any required electrical scope. Have it state the repair, parts, permit and return-to-service scope in writing; the independent provider confirms whether it can take the job.
Which local rules and workplace questions matter for a leveler?
Electrical scope. A new power feed or control circuit for a leveler can cross into regulated electrical work, which in Texas has to be done by a licensed person working through a licensed electrical contractor (TDLR Electricians). Texas adopted the 2026 National Electrical Code as the state electrical code, effective September 1, 2026 (TDLR notice). Several city pages in this metro still list an older edition, so ask which one the review will use. Verify the electrical contractor through TDLR’s license lookup.
Permits. San Antonio's code exempts "ordinary repairs to structures" but specifically excludes electric wiring and work affecting public health or general safety (City Code Sec. 10-6(g)). Whether your leveler job crosses that line is for the provider and the Building Official, not us. In unincorporated Bexar County, the Bexar County Fire Marshal determines building permit requirements — the full jurisdiction map is on the metro page.
The workplace rules underneath. OSHA requires dockboards capable of supporting the maximum intended load, protection against running off the edge for devices first used on or after January 17, 2017, portable-device securement, prevention of transport-vehicle movement while employees are on the dockboard, and handholds or other safe-handling means. The rule includes a demonstrated no-run-off-hazard exception and a specific alternative when securing a portable dockboard is infeasible (29 CFR 1910.26). Before a forklift boards a highway truck, its brakes must be set and wheel chocks placed under the rear wheels (29 CFR 1910.178). Fall protection kicks in at four feet, with specific exceptions written for loading docks and for dockboards used with motorized equipment (29 CFR 1910.28). Whether any of these applies to your situation is for you, your provider and the enforcing authority — not a web page.
Can planned maintenance cover the leveler too?
It can, and it is a different visit from a breakdown. Dock equipment and door maintenance are usually separate checklists even when they happen on the same trip, so ask for the leveler scope in writing. See planned maintenance and dock equipment repair.

Dock leveler repair questions
The leveler won't stay up. Is that the cylinder?
Not from that symptom alone. Some powered levelers normally lower onto the trailer when the raise button is released; unexpected dropping or failure to stay in the stored position is a different report. Give the provider the mechanism and what changed — nobody should name the failed part from a phone description.
How do I tell whether ours is hydraulic or mechanical?
By how it is operated. A pull chain or lever usually means mechanical. A push button usually means hydraulic or air-powered. You can tell that from where you already stand — there is no need to look in the pit.
There's oil in the pit. Can we keep using the bay?
That is a call for your own process and for the provider once they have seen it. A hydraulic leak needs assessment, and this page is not going to authorize continued use of it. Take the bay out of service the way your facility normally does and get it looked at.
Can a bent dock plate be welded and put back in service?
Do not assume so. Plates and boards have a marked capacity and an intended use; cracks or deformation need a manufacturer-based repair-or-replacement assessment. Take the damaged unit out of service through your facility’s process before it goes back under any traffic.
