A dock leveler is the built-in steel ramp at the dock door. It bridges the gap and the height difference between the dock floor and a trailer bed. Most levelers are one of five types. Why is leveler repair a job for a qualified technician?
Levelers store energy in springs, hydraulics and a raised deck, and much of the work happens in the pit under the deck. Federal OSHA's lockout rule covers servicing and maintenance "in which the unexpected energization or start up of the machines or equipment, or release of stored energy could cause injury to employees" (29 CFR 1910.147). That's why leveler service is done by trained people with the right procedures.
Dock plates and dock boards vs. a built-in leveler
A dock plate or dock board is portable. It is laid across the gap and moved from door to door. A leveler is built into the dock. Both bridge the gap to the trailer, but they are different equipment with different repair questions.
Federal OSHA's dockboard rule says dockboards must be "capable of supporting the maximum intended load." Portable ones must be "secured by anchoring them in place or using equipment or devices that prevent the dockboard from moving out of a safe position." Portable dockboards must also be "equipped with handholds or other means to permit safe handling" (29 CFR 1910.26).

Should you repair or replace the leveler?
Whether to repair or replace depends on the leveler's age, whether parts are available, whether the deck or frame is damaged, and whether its capacity still fits your forklifts and loads. It applies only when the employer can demonstrate infeasibility, the work operation is in process, and access is limited to authorized, trained employees (29 CFR 1910.28(b)(1)(iii)).
