Which kind of leveler do you have?
A dock leveler is the adjustable steel platform that bridges the height difference between your dock floor and a trailer bed. Its front edge is the lip, and it extends out to rest inside the trailer so a forklift can drive across.
There are five common kinds in this metro, and knowing which one you have shortens the call a lot. You do not need to know — but if you do, say it.

Vertical-storing is a storage configuration, not a power type — a vertical-storing leveler is usually hydraulic too. The two answers are not exclusive.
Is it a leveler, or a dock plate?
This one causes more wasted visits than anything else on the dock.
An installed leveler is built into the building — either in a pit or bolted to the dock face — and it is powered or spring-assisted. A dock plate or dock board is a loose piece of steel or aluminum that you set across the gap by hand or with a lift truck. It is portable equipment, it has its own rated capacity, and it is a different repair conversation entirely.

Say what the leveler is doing and what it is stopping. A qualified provider works out why.

Do not enter the pit, prop the deck, or work under a raised leveler to have a look. Keep people clear, stop using the bay, and follow your facility's existing process for taking that dock position out of service. Under a federal workplace standard, dockboards must be capable of supporting the imposed load and, when powered equipment is driven across them, must be designed and constructed to prevent transfer vehicles from running off the edge — which is a good short answer to why a drifting or damaged leveler is not something to work around. When the bay is down right now
If a leveler failed with a trailer at the dock, or a whole dock position is out of service and your receiving schedule is backing up, lead with that.
Then stop using the bay. Do not chock and drive across a leveler that drifted. Do not have a forklift push the lip out. Do not have someone hold the deck while someone else drives. Those are the three things that turn a repair into an incident.

Example wording — an example, not a real job:

What affects the price
We can't quote your exact repair from a web page. The price depends on the equipment, the fault, parts, and access. Here's what to ask before you authorize work.
- Which type it is. Hydraulic, mechanical, air, and edge-of-dock have different parts and different labor.
- Deck versus lip. A lip mechanism fault and a full deck or hydraulic failure are very different scopes.
- Age and parts support. Older units and discontinued models are where lead time appears.
- Pit condition. Water, debris, corrosion, or damaged curb angle can turn a mechanism repair into a bigger job. Ask whether the quote includes pit work or expressly excludes it.
- Whether the trailer restraint is involved. A pull-away often damages both.
- Capacity. A higher-capacity unit costs more to rebuild or replace.
- Access and shift windows. Whether the work can happen during receiving or has to wait.
- Repair versus replacement. Replacing a pit leveler is a project with concrete, curb steel, electrical, and possibly permits — not a service call. Ask for both numbers and what each leaves unresolved.

The Denver rules that matter for dock equipment
Here is a genuinely useful gap, and we would rather name it than paper over it.
Denver's contractor licensing policy lists a Class D specialty for overhead doors, and a separate one for fire doors. Its material handling equipment category is defined around conveyor systems. That silence is not permission to assume nothing applies. It is a reason to ask one specific question, in writing, before work starts:
"Which license classification covers this dock leveler work, and is your company licensed for it where our building sits?"
Then two follow-ons:
- Is there electrical work in this quote? A new control station or a power change is a state-credentialed trade in Colorado, and the permit and inspection side still belongs to the local authority.
- Does this scope need a permit? Replacing a pit leveler touches structure, concrete, and often power — a very different question from swapping a lip keeper. Questions about dock leveler repair in Denver
The lip won't come out. Is that the hydraulics?
Maybe, and maybe not. On a hydraulic unit the lip usually has its own cylinder or linkage, so a lip fault and a deck fault are often separate problems. On a mechanical unit it is more often a lip keeper or the linkage. Describe it as "the lip won't extend" and let the provider find it.
Can a leveler be repaired, or does the whole thing get replaced?
Most single-component failures are repairs. Replacement enters the conversation when the deck or frame is structurally damaged, when the unit is beyond parts support, or when the pit itself has failed. Ask for both options in writing.
Is the pit part of the repair?
Ask specifically, because it is the most common scope surprise. Mechanism work and concrete or curb-steel work are different trades, and a quote can legitimately include one and exclude the other.
Do I have a leveler or a dock plate?
If it is built into the building and powered or spring-assisted, it is a leveler. If it is a loose piece of steel or aluminum you put in place by hand or with a forklift, it is a plate or board — go to the dock equipment page.
