Is it the leveler, the door, or a portable plate?
A bay can have a door, an installed leveler and a portable bridge device. People use “dock plate” loosely, so describe which part is involved; you do not need to diagnose it.

An edge-of-dock leveler is the small one bolted to the dock face rather than set into a pit — it bridges a shorter gap and handles a narrower range of trailer heights. Worth naming on the call, because it's a different repair from a pit leveler.
Names you may see on the deck or the power unit include Rite-Hite, Kelley, Serco, Blue Giant, Nordock and Pentalift. Those are identification examples. Naming a manufacturer is not a claim about what's installed at your facility, about authorized service, or about dealer affiliation.

Some levelers are designed to float with the trailer bed as its height changes during loading. Movement alone is not a fault diagnosis; an unexpected drop, loss of support or failure to store needs assessment. Rite-Hite’s explanation of trailer-following float.
Do not enter the pit to prepare for a call. Not to look, fish out debris or check a leak. Same for reaching under a raised deck or trying to walk a mechanical unit down when it's jammed. Keep people and lift trucks clear, don't drive over it, and take the bay out of use through your facility's normal process. Then call.
Dock plate, dockboard, or installed leveler?
The distinction affects load rating and safe use, not just the name. Identify the device before anyone decides whether repair or replacement is appropriate.
An installed leveler is fitted to the dock—a pit unit or an edge-of-dock unit. Manufacturers commonly distinguish dockboards rated for powered equipment from lighter dock plates for non-powered traffic. Neither the name nor aluminum construction establishes a particular device’s rating: Bluff makes aluminum boards for forklift use and plates restricted to non-powered traffic.
OSHA §1910.21 defines “dockboards” to include bridge plates, dock plates and dock levelers. §1910.26 contains the requirements. MHI’s MH30 summaries distinguish dock leveling devices from portable devices. Equipment scope checked September 17, 2026.
So one federal rule may treat the plate leaning against your wall and the hydraulic unit in bay 4 under the same requirement, while the design standards treat them as different machines with different ratings. On your dock, they are absolutely different machines.

What to say when you call
Example wording for a first call. It's an example, not a script, and not a real job.
"The leveler in bay 4 at our Chester warehouse won't come up and there's a trailer backed in — I can give you the address."
Three steps after you call
- You describe it. Facility location, bay number, what the deck or lip is doing.
- Your request may be shared. Calls may be shared with an independent commercial dock-and-door repair company.
- That company takes it from there. They confirm whether they can serve the address, what they can do, when, and what they charge — plus their own contract, work and warranty terms.
Useful, not required
Bay number. Which type of leveler, if you know. Whether a trailer is at the dock. Whether other bays are affected. Site access and check-in rules. Whether there's a data plate you can read without climbing or leaning into the pit.
Call without any of it. The facility city or address, a bay number, and "won't come up" are enough.
If you reach voicemail, leave the facility address, the door or dock number if known, what's wrong, and a callback number.

What affects the price
We can't quote your exact leveler repair from a web page. The price depends on the mechanism, the fault, parts, and access. Here's what to ask before you authorize work.
Ask whether the first visit is diagnostic or repair, what the service-call charge covers, and whether it comes off the job. Ask what the estimate includes and how they'll handle it if they open the pit and find the problem is the concrete rather than the leveler — that happens, and you want to know the plan before, not after.

Repair or replace this leveler?
There's no age at which a leveler is automatically done. These are the factors that decide it:
- How many times it's been down this year. Ask whether repeated failures share an unresolved cause.
- Whether parts are still available for that model and mechanism.
- Deck deformation. A deck that's been bent or dished by overloading is a different problem from a failed cylinder.
- Whether the pit is sound. Failed supports can leave the equipment unsafe even after a mechanism repair. The structural scope must be addressed separately.
- Whether your trailer mix changed. A leveler sized for one range of trailer heights doesn't magically cover a new one.
Ask for the case for each option in the condition your unit is actually in, not a general rule.
Safety standards under this equipment
OSHA §1910.26 addresses intended loads, run-off protection, portable-device securing, prevention of transport-vehicle movement, and safe handling. Its run-off provision covers devices initially placed in service on or after January 17, 2017, with a no-run-off-hazard exception. Portable securing has its own feasibility exception; handholds or other means must permit safe handling. Keeping levelers on a schedule
Ask for a dock leveler maintenance scope tied to the model’s instructions, actual use and environment. It should identify which mechanical, hydraulic or air components are checked, how findings are recorded, and whether corrective parts and labor are quoted separately.
Give the provider the number of units, any known models, recurring symptoms and access restrictions. Ask how the proposed interval was chosen and what happens when an unsafe defect is found. What local approvals matter for dock leveler work?
Describe whether the proposal repairs the installed mechanism, replaces the leveler, changes its supports or pit, or adds power and controls. These are different scopes. Ask who will handle any structural or electrical work and whether the building official needs drawings or a permit; this page does not establish an exemption.
Check the contractor’s actual scope and active licence through Virginia DPOR. The class thresholds consider project and annual value; the classification or specialty must cover the proposed work. CBC or CIC alone does not authorize electrical work.

Why won't my dock leveler lip extend?
Lip operation depends on the model: the deck lift and lip need not use the same actuation. A qualified provider checks the lip assembly, hinge, mechanism and relevant controls. Tell the company what you already observed—whether the deck moved while the lip stayed in, or nothing moved—without operating it again to test.
Is a hydraulic leveler more expensive to fix than a mechanical one?
Not reliably. A hydraulic unit has cylinders, hoses, valves and a power unit that a mechanical unit doesn't, but a mechanical unit has springs and a hold-down that are their own kind of work. What actually moves the price is which component failed, whether the part is stocked, and how much time the pit and the bay access cost.
Can we keep using the bay with the leveler down?
That's a call for your safety process, not for a website — and the honest answer is that bridging a gap without working equipment is how people get hurt. Don't substitute a portable plate unless it's rated and intended for what you're rolling across it. Take the bay out of use the way your facility normally does and tell us it's down when you call.
Is an edge-of-dock leveler worth repairing, or is it a replacement?
Ask the provider to assess the mechanism, compatible parts, mounting and dock face together. Repair versus replacement depends on that condition and whether the unit’s operating range still suits your trailers; there is no universal price comparison with pit equipment.
