Plate or board?
The ANSI standard for portable dock loading devices, MH30.2, covers both dock boards and dock plates and tells them apart by how they're built. Some makers describe plates as lighter bridges for hand trucks and boards as heavier bridges for forklifts. That's a maker's description, not a rule. The capacity marked on the device is what counts.
What to look for, from a safe spot

- Are the edges bent or curled?
- Are welds cracked?
- Are the legs, locking pins or curbs missing or bent?
- Does it slide or shift when set in place?
What the rules say
Federal rules use "dockboard" for dock plates, bridge plates and dock levelers alike. Under 29 CFR 1910.26, a dockboard must carry its maximum intended load; one put into service on or after January 17, 2017 must keep forklifts and carts from running off its edge, unless the employer shows there's no such hazard; and a portable one must be secured so it can't slide out of a safe position. At rail docks, railcars must be kept from moving while a dockboard or bridge plate is in place (1910.178(k)(4)). That matters at rail-served warehouses like those in Big Cedar Industrial Center.
