Dock Plate Repair
A damaged portable dock plate or dock board is a different job from a broken leveler. Identify the device, keep it out of use under your facility’s process, and confirm what its manufacturer allows before anyone repairs it.
Dock plate, dock leveler or dock door?
Start by naming the equipment, because each has its own repair path. A dock plate or dock board is portable: it is placed across the gap between the dock and the trailer and can be moved between positions. A dock leveler is installed at the dock. The dock door closes the opening above both.

| What you can see | What it is | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| A loose plate or board placed across the dock-to-trailer gap and moved between positions, for example with carrying handles or locking legs | Portable dock plate or dock board | This page, then the local dock plate pages |
| A hinged platform set into a pit in the dock floor, with a lip that extends onto the trailer bed | Pit-style dock leveler | Dock leveler repair |
| A shorter unit fixed to the face or edge of the dock, with no pit | Edge-of-dock leveler | Dock leveler repair |
| The sectional or steel door that closes the dock opening, with its tracks, springs, cables and operator | Building-mounted dock door | Loading dock and dock door repair |
People sometimes call the deck of an installed leveler “the dock plate”. If the platform is attached to the building, start with dock leveler repair instead.
What a qualified assessment needs
A qualified person deciding what to do with a damaged plate or board works from the exact device, not the general category. Expect the assessment to establish:
- Identity: the manufacturer, model and rated capacity, from the nameplate or labels, or from purchase and inspection records your facility already holds.
- Damage: what is bent, cracked, worn, loose or missing, and where.
- Traffic and load: what crosses the device (foot traffic, hand trucks, manual pallet jacks, powered pallet trucks or forklifts) and the heaviest combined weight of equipment and load.
- Application: the height difference and gap it bridges, the trailers and dock positions it is used at, and how it is held in position.
- Outcome: whether the manufacturer permits a repair for that damage with approved parts, or whether the device should be replaced.
Capacity is product-specific. Calling a device a “plate”, the thickness of its metal or whether it is steel or aluminum does not establish that it can carry a forklift. The rating comes from the nameplate and the manufacturer’s documentation for that vehicle, load and use, and some portable dockplates are designed only for foot traffic, hand trucks or manual pallet jacks.
Repair or replace a damaged dock plate?
Use this table to frame the conversation. For the exact product, the manufacturer’s instructions decide what is allowed.

| What you have found | Likely direction | Question to settle |
|---|---|---|
| Damage limited to a part the manufacturer supplies separately, such as hardware or a handle | A repair may be possible with manufacturer-approved parts, carried out by a qualified person | Is an approved part available for this model, and is the rest of the device in satisfactory condition? |
| Bent, deformed or cracked tread, plate or structure | Treat it as a replacement question unless the manufacturer documents an approved repair | What do the manufacturer’s instructions say about this damage on this model? |
| No legible nameplate, model or rating, and no records that identify the device | Keep it out of use under your facility’s process until it is identified, or specify a replacement | Can the manufacturer identify the device and its original rating? |
| A sound device used for the wrong job: heavier equipment or loads, a wider gap or a greater height difference than it is rated for | Specify a device for the actual application; a repair does not change what a device is rated for | What capacity, size and positioning method do this dock and this traffic need? |
Be cautious with any proposal to straighten, weld or reinforce a damaged plate and return it to service, and ask which manufacturer instruction or approval supports it. Uptime does not promise that any damaged device can be repaired or restored to its original capacity.
One manufacturer’s instructions, as an example
Vestil’s owner’s manual for its A, AH, E and EH series dockplates (revision 11/11/2025) shows how specific these instructions can be. It warns against using these dockplates with powered equipment such as fork trucks and describes them as designed only for foot traffic, hand trucks or, for the E and EH series, manual pallet jacks. Only qualified personnel should inspect, maintain and repair them, using manufacturer-approved replacement parts; the dockplate must not be modified, and temporary repairs of damaged or missing parts are prohibited. If the plate is deformed or the tread is worn, the manual directs removing the dockplate from service and replacing it. It also sets daily and monthly inspections and calls for a dated record of each one (Vestil A, AH, E and EH dockplate manual, pages 3 and 6).
Those instructions cover the listed Vestil models only. Other manufacturers publish their own, and the instructions for your exact device are the ones that apply.
What to tell the repair company
Share what you already know. None of it requires handling the damaged device.
- The facility address and the dock positions where the device is used.
- What the device is, plate or board, and anything already in your records: manufacturer, model, rated capacity, serial number.
- What is wrong with it, as staff described it when it was taken out of use.
- What crosses it: foot traffic, hand trucks, pallet jacks or forklifts, and the heaviest load.
- Whether it is already out of service, and whether you want an assessment, a replacement quote or both.
Do not lift or move a damaged plate, stand on or under it, enter a pit or approach the dock edge to read a label or take a photograph. If information is not already available safely, say so; the provider can collect it during the visit.
Pricing and scope questions to ask
Uptime does not publish prices for this work, and a plate inquiry does not imply a larger repair job. Before work is scheduled, ask:
- Is there a charge for the visit or assessment, and how is it billed if no repair is made?
- Does the manufacturer permit a repair for this device and this damage, and what document supports that?
- If replacement is recommended, what is the specification: rated capacity, size, material, and how it is positioned and secured?
- Who handles ordering, delivery and handling of the replacement, and what is the lead time?
- Is removal or disposal of the old device included, or charged separately?
- If the visit finds a different problem, such as leveler or dock-face damage, how is that quoted?
To have portable plates and boards looked at on a schedule with the rest of the dock, see loading dock maintenance.
Commercial equipment only. Not residential garage doors, boat docks, truck or trailer cargo doors, pedestrian storefront entrances, locks, door closers or parts-only orders. Structural concrete, pit and slab work is not included.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a bent dock plate be straightened or welded?
Do not assume so. Whether any repair is allowed depends on the manufacturer's instructions for that exact device and that damage. At least one manufacturer's manual directs removing a deformed plate from service and replacing it, and prohibits temporary repairs. Ask what manufacturer approval supports any proposed repair.
Is a dock plate the same as a dock leveler?
No. A dock plate or dock board is a portable device placed across the gap and moved between positions. A dock leveler is installed at the dock, in a pit or on the dock edge. If the platform is attached to the building, start with dock leveler repair.
Can a forklift use our dock plate?
Only if that exact device is rated for that vehicle and load in the way you use it. The name, the thickness of the metal and the material do not establish forklift suitability, and some portable dockplates are designed only for foot traffic, hand trucks or manual pallet jacks. Check the nameplate and the manufacturer's documentation.
Does Uptime repair or sell dock plates?
No. Uptime Dock & Door is an independent service-request website. Local pages publish the inquiry path for each area, and the independent company that takes a request confirms whether it handles portable plates and boards and sets availability, scope, pricing and terms.
