Is it a leveler, or something else at the dock?
A dock leveler is an installed platform that bridges the height and gap between the loading dock and a trailer. Pit-style units sit in the dock floor; edge-of-dock units mount at the dock face. It stays with the building.
Three things people mix up with it:
- A portable dock plate or board is a loose piece of metal you set in place. It is not built into the dock and it has its own load rating. → Dock equipment repair
- A trailer restraint is the hook or wheel device at the dock face that holds the trailer. Different machine, different failure. → Trailer and vehicle restraint repair
- A dock lift raises a whole load from ground level. A leveler only bridges a gap. Dock lifts are outside what we take calls about.
If the problem is the door above the leveler rather than the deck itself, that is a sectional door or a coiling door.

Dock plates and dock boards are not dock levelers
This distinction matters more than it sounds.
A portable dock plate or board is a loose device you set in place by hand or with equipment. It has a load rating stamped or plated on it, and that rating is tied to a specific kind of use — some are made for hand trucks and pallet jacks, others for powered equipment. An installed leveler is a fixed part of the dock structure.
Here is the part worth saying plainly: a damaged portable device is never assumed to be weldable, safe to put back in service, or rated for the truck that is about to drive on it. Bent, cracked, or with an unreadable rating plate — that is a decision for a qualified provider working from the device's own rating and the manufacturer's instructions. Not from a web page, and not from how it looks.

Hydraulics, springs, hold-downs and control wiring are the parts we will not talk you through. Keep people and equipment clear of the deck and the open dock edge. Do not force it. Do not keep hitting the button. Never go under a raised deck. Take the bay out of use through your facility's normal process.

- You describe it. Facility location, which bay, what the leveler is doing.
- Your request may be shared. Calls may be shared with an independent commercial dock-and-door repair company.
- That company takes it from there. They confirm whether they can serve the address, what they can do, when, and what they charge — plus their own contract, work and warranty terms.
Useful, not required
Bay number. Hydraulic, mechanical or air, if you know. Whether a trailer is at the dock right now. Whether other bays are doing the same thing. The brand — Rite-Hite, Kelley, Serco, Blue Giant, Nordock, Pentalift — only if you already know it or can read it from where you are standing.
You can call without any of that. The facility address, a bay number, and "the leveler won't come up" are enough.

What affects the price
We can't quote your leveler repair from a web page. The price depends on the mechanism, the fault, parts, and access. Here's what to ask before you authorize work.
Find out which kind of number you are being given. A call-out or diagnostic fee is a charge to come look — ask whether it comes off approved work. A starting price needs its included scope spelled out. A scoped fixed price is named work on named parts — ask what happens if they open the pit and find more. An estimate is a guess before the equipment is opened; a final quote is a commitment to a defined scope.

One more worth asking on a leveler specifically: whether the price assumes the trailer can be moved off the bay first. It changes the job more than people expect.

Repair it, or replace it?
Four things to weigh, and none of them is a percentage rule.
- How many times this unit has been fixed, and whether those repairs share a cause nobody has resolved.
- Whether parts still exist for your mechanism and model.
- Whether the pit and the surrounding structure are sound. That is a concrete question, not an equipment question, but it decides what a replacement actually costs.
- Whether the dock's real use has outgrown the unit. A leveler specified for one kind of traffic and now carrying another wears out differently.
The Minnesota rules that touch dock leveler work
A Minnesota residential contractor licence is not the commercial credential to look for. DLI says commercial construction contractors must register unless an applicable exemption applies, such as holding the relevant DLI licence. Registration is not permission to perform work that requires a trade licence. Check the company's legal name in DLI's licence and registration lookup and ask which registration, trade licence and local requirements apply to the actual scope (DLI construction contractor registration).
Powered levelers can add electrical scope for the power unit, circuits, controls or interlocks; a mechanical leveler is not automatically wired equipment. Ask who is licensed for any electrical work and which permit or inspection is required. Minor repair and maintenance have specific rules (DLI guidance); state or municipal inspection depends on the address. Minnesota uses the 2026 NEC for permits filed on or after August 17, 2026 (DLI codes and standards).
Replacing a leveler can also involve the building itself. The State Building Code applies statewide and supersedes municipal building codes (Minn. Stat. § 326B.121), so the code does not change across a city line — but the permit office, the fee and the review time do. The provider and the issuing office confirm what applies to your job.

Can you ask about planned leveler maintenance?
Yes. Ask for a leveler-specific scope covering the deck and lip, hinges, operating mechanism, supports and fitted controls—not just a door checklist. The provider should use the model’s maintenance instructions and the way the bay is used to set the interval, then record defects and get approval for repairs.
A coordinated dock and door maintenance proposal can include that work without treating the leveler as a garage door.

Dock leveler questions
My leveler won't come up. Can we still load that bay?
That is a call for your facility and a qualified provider, not a web page. Take the bay out of use through your normal process and keep people clear of the open dock edge. Do not improvise a bridge with a plate that was not rated for it. Say on the phone that the leveler is the problem and which bay it is.
Hydraulic, mechanical or air — how do I tell which one we have?
Hydraulic and air-powered units commonly have a push-button station; a mechanical unit may have a release chain or lever. Those are identification clues, not instructions to operate a failed leveler. Share only what you already know or can read safely without approaching the damaged equipment. The provider can identify the mechanism.
Is a dock plate the same as a dock leveler?
No, and it matters. A leveler is built into the dock and stays there. A dock plate or board is a loose device with its own load rating for a specific kind of traffic. A damaged portable device is never assumed safe to weld, straighten or keep using — that is a qualified assessment against the manufacturer's rating.
The lip extends but the deck sits low against the trailer. What is that?
It could be the mechanism, the trailer's height or air suspension, or how the unit is set up for that bay. The useful thing to report is exactly what you described — lip out, deck low, and roughly how much. Stop using the bay until it has been looked at. An uneven bridge under a forklift is the part that hurts people.
