Which piece of equipment stopped working?
You don't need the right name to call. Most loading dock problems come down to one of a few things: the door over the opening, the leveler or plate that bridges the gap to the trailer, the restraint that holds the trailer, or the seals and bumpers around the bay. Find the row that looks like your problem.
| What you see | What it's usually called | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| Door panels that ride up tracks into the ceiling are stuck, bent or crooked | Dock door, bay door, sectional or overhead door | Commercial garage & overhead door repair |

| A fast fabric or rigid door at a cooler, freezer or busy aisle keeps stopping | High-speed door | High-speed door repair |
| A rolling door with a fire label dropped, won't reset or is due for its yearly test | Rolling fire door | Rolling fire door inspection & repair |
| The built-in deck at the dock won't raise, lower or put its lip on the trailer | Dock leveler (pit or edge-of-dock) | Dock leveler repair |

What is the dock or door doing?
Tell the person on the phone what you see. You don't have to guess what broke. The table shows what a qualified repair company may look at for each problem, and why it matters. It is not a diagnosis, and none of it is a job for your staff.
| What you see | What a qualified company may inspect | Why it matters | What to say on the call |
|---|---|---|---|
| Door stuck open or won't close all the way | Springs, cables, track alignment, opener limits, safety sensors | An open door leaves the building and the dock edge exposed | Which bay, that it's stuck open, and about how far |
| Door off its track or hanging crooked | Rollers, track, cables, hinges, panels | A door out of its track can fall | That it's off track and people are staying clear |
| A loud bang, then the door won't lift or feels very heavy | Torsion spring (the tightly wound spring over the door), cables, the counterbalance system | Springs hold huge tension; this is a job for a trained technician only | That you heard a bang and it won't open |
| Door hit by a forklift or trailer | Panels, track, struts, opener mount | Running a damaged door can make the damage worse | That it was hit, which part is bent, and that it's out of use |
| Opener hums, reverses or stops partway | Opener, limits, photo eyes, safety edges, controls, wiring | Safety sensors and edges are part of the opener system | What the motor and door do |
| Leveler won't come down, or won't stay down | Hydraulics or springs, controls, hold-down, lip | A deck that isn't stable isn't safe to drive over | Which door, and what the leveler won't do |
| Leveler lip won't extend or falls short | Lip hinge, lip mechanism, hydraulics or air bag | A short lip leaves a gap at the trailer bed | That the lip isn't reaching the trailer |
| Restraint lights stuck, hook won't grab or let go | Restraint, sensors, controls, interlock | Your trailer-securing process depends on it | Which door, the light colors, and whether a trailer is at the dock |
| Torn seal or shelter, crushed or missing bumper | Pads, curtains, frames, bumper mounts | Weather, heat loss, and impact damage to the wall or leveler | Which bay and what's torn or crushed |
| Roll-up jammed, grinding or coming down crooked | Curtain, guides, drum and spring assembly, opener | Roll-up springs are under tension too | Where it stopped and any noise |
| Fire door won't close or failed its test | Closing device, release device, speed governor | A fire door has to close when it's released | That it failed a test or inspection, or won't close |
If one of these sounds like your bay, call and say which door or dock it is.
Need emergency dock door repair in Boise & Nampa?
Call (385) 325-7138 and say "stuck open" or "dock down" first, then give the facility address and the bay number. While you wait to hear what the repair company can do, keep people away from the door or leveler, don't force it open or closed, and follow your facility's own process for taking that bay out of use.
What to say first. Stuck open, won't close, dock down, or trailer waiting. Then the address, the door or dock number, and whether anything is hanging or bent.
What not to do. Don't stand or walk under a door that's off track or hanging. Don't drive onto a leveler that won't stay down. Don't try to release, wind, or adjust springs, cables or hydraulics. Don't bypass a safety sensor or a trailer restraint. If your site has a lockout or bay-closure procedure, use it.
What this call can and can't promise. Your call may be shared with an independent commercial dock-and-door repair company. That company tells you whether it can come and when, and what it will cost. We don't promise a response time or after-hours service from this page.
Got an overhead door stuck open right now? The overhead door page covers that case in more detail.
If the dock is down, say so first.
What we take calls about — and what we don't
We take calls about loading-dock equipment and building-mounted commercial doors at businesses in the Treasure Valley. That means overhead, sectional, roll-up, rolling-steel, high-speed and rolling fire doors, plus dock levelers, dock plates and boards, trailer restraints, seals, shelters, bumpers and dock lights. We don't take calls about homes, boats, truck bodies or storefront doors.
Facilities. Warehouses and distribution centers. Manufacturing plants. Cold storage and food and beverage plants. Auto service bays and fleet garages. Workshops. Commercial self-storage. Other commercial buildings. A facility doesn't have to be a giant distribution center. A two-bay shop in Garden City counts.
Openers and controls go with the door or dock they run. A dead door opener goes to the door page. A restraint light that won't change goes to the restraint page.
| Not in scope | Call this kind of company instead |
|---|---|
| Residential garage doors | A residential garage door company |
| Boat docks and boat lifts | A marine or boat-dock contractor |
| Truck and trailer cargo doors, including box-truck roll-ups | A truck body or trailer repair shop |
| Storefront, automatic-entry, glass and walk-through doors, locks and closers | A storefront, automatic door or locksmith company |
| Parts-only orders | A parts supplier |
| Concrete, dock pit and slab work | A concrete contractor |
Commercial dock or door? Call and tell us which bay.
What happens after you call?
You describe the problem. Your call may be shared with an independent commercial dock-and-door repair company. The independent company that takes the work confirms the facility address, the scope, availability, price and scheduling, and its own contract, work and warranty terms. Uptime doesn't do the repair or set the price.
Example of what to say — not a script: "Bay 4 is stuck halfway open at our warehouse in Nampa, and I can give you the address."
- Call (385) 325-7138 and describe the problem: what's stuck, which bay, and the facility address.
- Your call may be shared with an independent commercial dock-and-door repair company.
- That company confirms the facility address, the scope, availability, price and scheduling, and its own contract, work and warranty terms.
If you reach voicemail, leave the facility address, the door or dock number if known, what's wrong, and a callback number.
Useful, not required. Only if you already know it: the bay or door number, the type of equipment, a brand name you can read from a safe spot, a rough door size, when it started, whether a trailer is at the dock, and how to get into the site (gate, check-in, dock hours). You can call without any of this. The address, the bay and "stuck open" are enough.

What kind of dock and door equipment is this?
A loading dock is usually several pieces of equipment working together. There's a door, a leveler or plate, often a trailer restraint, and a seal or shelter. Each one is a different repair. Use this table to put a name to what you see.
| What it looks like | Service it belongs to | What to mention on the call | Where this page stops |
|---|---|---|---|
| Horizontal panels that ride up tracks into the ceiling | Overhead door repair | Off track, bent panel, bang then won't open | Not residential garage doors |
| Steel slats that coil around a drum above the opening | Roll-up & rolling-steel repair | Stuck, crooked, noisy, hood damage | Not truck or trailer roll-ups |
| A roll-up with a fire label and a release device | Rolling fire door inspection & repair | Test due, failed drop, won't close | Not swinging fire doors |
| A fast fabric or rigid door, often at coolers and freezers | High-speed door repair | Stops partway, curtain out of its guides, fault code | — |
| A hinged steel deck set in a pit at the dock face, with a lip that drops onto the trailer (some people call it a dock ramp) | Dock leveler repair | Won't go down, won't stay down, lip won't extend | No concrete pit work |
| A short hinged lip bolted to the dock edge, with no pit (edge-of-dock leveler) | Dock leveler repair | Lip bent or won't flip out | — |
| A loose metal plate or curbed board carried to the dock edge | Dock plate & board repair | Bent, cracked, rating label missing | A damaged plate stays out of use until evaluated |
| A hook or barrier at the dock face that holds the trailer, with red and green lights | Trailer restraint & dock lock repair | Lights, won't engage, won't release | Not trailer repair |
| Foam pads or fabric curtains around the door | Dock seal & shelter repair | Torn, flattened, frame bent | — |
| Rubber blocks on the dock face | Dock bumper replacement | Crushed, missing, anchors pulled | No concrete repair |
Names you might see on the equipment
These are examples of manufacturers whose products include this kind of equipment. They help with identification only. Seeing a name here doesn't mean any company works on that brand. If you can read a label from a safe spot, tell the provider. If you can't, that's fine.
| Equipment | Example manufacturer names |
|---|---|
| Sectional and overhead doors | Overhead Door, Clopay, Raynor |
| Rolling steel and rolling fire doors | Cornell, Cookson |
| Dock levelers | Rite-Hite, Kelley, Blue Giant, Poweramp |
| Trailer restraints | Rite-Hite (Dok-Lok), Kelley, Blue Giant, Poweramp |
| Dock seals and shelters | Rite-Hite, Blue Giant |
| High-speed doors | Rite-Hite, Rytec |
| Dock plates and boards | Bluff |

What does loading dock or dock door repair cost in Boise?
We can't quote your exact repair from a web page. The price depends on the equipment, the fault, parts, and access. Here's what to ask before you authorize work.
The independent company that takes the job sets the price and confirms it with you. Companies price in different ways. Some charge a service-call or diagnostic fee to come look. Some publish a starting price. Some give a fixed price for a set scope. Others give an estimate first and a final quote after they see the equipment. Ask which one you're getting and what it includes.
| Cost factor | Why it changes the price | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Service call or diagnostic fee | Many companies charge to come out and look | "Is there a trip or diagnostic charge, and does it go toward the repair?" |
| After-hours or weekend visit | If a company offers it, it may cost more | "Is the rate different after hours?" |
| Parts | Springs, cables, panels, openers, hydraulic parts, seals | "Which parts, and are they in stock?" |
| Door size, weight and type | Bigger, heavier, insulated, fire-rated and high-speed doors take more work | "Does the size or rating change the price?" |
| Leveler type | Hydraulic, mechanical and air-powered levelers are serviced differently | "What type is ours, and what's failing?" |
| Opener and controls | A new opener can mean electrical work and a permit | "Does this need an electrician or an electrical permit?" |
| Access | Lifts, a trailer at the bay, dock hours, cold rooms | "Does access change the time or crew?" |
| Lead time | Special-order panels and parts take longer | "How long if parts have to be ordered?" |
| More than one bay | Several doors or docks on one visit changes the plan | "Can you price the bays together?" |
Repair it, or replace it?
Replacement usually comes up when damage is widespread, the equipment is at the end of its life, parts are no longer available, or repairs keep adding up. The company should tell you which of these applies and put it in writing. If you're looking at a new door, see commercial garage door installation.

Before you hire: the Idaho rules that affect dock and door work
Idaho requires contractors to register with the state, with narrow exemptions. Anyone contracting electrical work needs an Idaho electrical license, and the electrical permit must be bought before the work starts. Which office issues that permit depends on where the building is.
Facts checked: September 23, 2026. The provider and the issuing office decide what applies to your job.
Contractor registration, and the $2,000 line
Idaho requires anyone working as a contractor to register with the state, and the law's definition of construction includes repairing (Idaho Code § 54-5204, § 54-5203). There's an exemption for casual, minor work under $2,000 total. It doesn't apply to work that's part of a bigger project, or to a job split into smaller contracts to stay under the line (§ 54-5205). Companies licensed under certain other Idaho trade laws, such as electrical contractors, fall under those laws instead.
To register, a company shows general liability insurance of at least $300,000, including completed operations, plus workers' comp proof or a statement of why it isn't required (§ 54-5210).
Ask: "What's your Idaho contractor registration number?" Then look it up on DOPL's public registration search.
The electrical permit comes first, and the address decides who issues it
Contracting electrical work in Idaho takes an electrical contractor license (§ 54-1002). No one may energize an electrical installation before buying the permit for it (§ 54-1005). The state rules add: "All electrical permits shall be purchased before work is commenced" (IDAPA 24.39.10).
The office that issues the permit changes across the Treasure Valley:
- Meridian handles electrical permits along with its building permits (Meridian Building Services).
- Nampa issues its own electrical permits, and its page says permitted wiring is installed by "a state licensed journeyman electrician employed by a state licensed electrical contractor" (Nampa electrical permits).
- Caldwell accepts electrical permit applications through its Building Safety portal.
- Unincorporated Canyon County: the county says electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits are handled by the State of Idaho's Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (Canyon County Building).
DOPL puts it plainly: "Even though you have a building permit issued by a local jurisdiction, it may still be necessary for you to obtain permits from DOPL for electrical work" (DOPL electrical FAQ).
One narrow exception: a facility's own employed maintenance electrician doing like-for-like maintenance on the employer's premises (§ 54-1016). That exception does not cover an outside company.
Ask: "Does this job include electrical work? Who holds the license, and who buys the permit?"
Six permit offices, one metro
None of the Treasure Valley building offices we could check publishes a rule for replacing a commercial overhead door. Canyon County's code says a permit is required to "alter, repair" any building (Canyon County Building). Nampa's commercial list covers things like tenant improvements and remodeling, and doesn't mention doors by name (Nampa commercial permits). Ask the provider whether your job needs a permit. The office decides.
| Where the building is | Office | How to apply | Phone |
|---|---|---|---|
| City of Boise | Planning & Development Services — Building | Permitting portal | (208) 608-7070 |
| City of Nampa | Building Safety | Online portal | See city page |
| City of Meridian | Building Services | Citizen Portal | (208) 887-2211 |

| Unincorporated Ada County | Ada County Development Services | See county page | (208) 287-7900 |
| Unincorporated Canyon County | Canyon County Building | See county page | (208) 402-4163 |
Eagle, Kuna, Garden City, Star, Middleton, Emmett and the other cities are separate cities, so check with the city where the building sits. Use the building's actual parcel, not the ZIP code or mailing city, to find the right office.
The code book didn't change this year
Idaho's adopted codes are still the 2018 International Building Code, Existing Building Code and Fire Code, plus the 2023 National Electrical Code (DOPL adopted codes). A proposal to move to the 2024 building codes was rejected by the House Business Committee on February 17, 2026 (committee minutes). Boise lists the same editions on its own current codes page, with the 2023 NEC effective April 26, 2024.
Rolling fire doors: tested every year
The Idaho State Fire Marshal's adopted-standards list includes NFPA 80, 2019 edition (State Fire Marshal). The door industry's guidance says a rolling fire door "shall be inspected and drop-tested not less than annually" with drop tests by a trained door systems technician (DASMA TDS 271). DASMA recommends keeping periodic inspection records at least three years (DASMA TDS 299).
In Boise, the fire department's safety guide says "All applicable systems are to be tagged for onsite verification by the inspection company and reported to the Boise Fire Department via the Compliance Engine" (Boise Fire safety guide). The guide doesn't list which systems count. Ask Boise Fire Prevention, (208) 570-6559, whether your rolling fire doors are on that list. More on the rolling fire door page.
Public buildings: the $100,000 line
A public works project estimated at $100,000 or more needs an Idaho Public Works Contractor license (§ 54-1903). It's the same DOPL lookup.
Federal OSHA applies here
Idaho has no state OSHA plan for private employers. Federal OSHA covers most private-sector workers in the state (OSHA State Plans). The federal rules call for "measures, such as wheel chocks or sand shoes" to keep the trailer from moving while people are on a dockboard (29 CFR 1910.26). The forklift rule says "brakes shall be set and wheel blocks shall be in place" during loading (1910.178(m)(7)). For commercial trucks, OSHA has said federal motor carrier rules take over its chocking requirement, while employers still protect workers from trailer movement (OSHA letter, March 7, 2011). And they set fall protection for dockboards and dock edges (1910.28). How those apply at your dock is a question for your safety lead and the provider.
| Question to ask | Who answers it | Where to check |

Counties and communities we take calls about
Call about dock and commercial door work at facilities in Boise, Nampa, Meridian, Caldwell and across Ada, Canyon, Gem, Boise and Owyhee counties. These five counties are the Boise metro as the federal government defines it (OMB Bulletin 23-01). The independent company confirms the facility address and whether it can serve it.
| County | Cities and places | Page |
|---|---|---|
| Ada | Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Kuna, Garden City, Star, Hidden Springs, Avimor | Meridian · Ada County |
| Canyon | Nampa, Caldwell, Middleton, Parma, Wilder, Greenleaf, Notus, Melba | Caldwell · Canyon County |
| Gem | Emmett | Outer counties |
| Boise County | Idaho City, Horseshoe Bend, Placerville, Crouch, Garden Valley | Outer counties |
| Owyhee | Homedale, Marsing, Grand View, Murphy | Outer counties |
Heads-up: Boise County is not where Boise is. Boise is in Ada County. Boise County is the mountain county to the north, and its county seat is Idaho City (Boise County).
Placing a facility. Some of the valley's big commercial areas: Boise's Airport Commerce District covers about 10,000 acres south and east of Boise Airport, where the city says manufacturing makes up most private jobs (City of Boise). In Nampa, Amazon opened a roughly 650,000-square-foot fulfillment center in November 2020 (Idaho Press), and Americold runs a cold-storage warehouse on Second Road North (Americold). Caldwell's Sky Ranch Logistics Center sits off Smeed Parkway (KTVB). These are landmarks, not a customer list.
Facilities in Payette County, Ontario, Oregon or Mountain Home can call too. The provider confirms whether the address is one it can serve.

Common questions about dock and door repair in Boise & Nampa
Do you take calls about loading docks in Nampa as well as Boise? Yes. We take calls about commercial facilities across the Treasure Valley, including Nampa, Meridian and Caldwell. The independent company confirms the address.
Is a commercial dock door fixed by a garage door company? Some garage door companies do commercial work and some don't. When you call, say it's a commercial loading-dock door. Ask the company that takes the job about its commercial door experience.
Can I call if I don't know what the equipment is called? Yes. The bay number, the address and what it's doing are enough.
Can someone come right away if a dock door is stuck open? The independent company tells you whether it can come and when. Lead with the fact that it's stuck open so the company knows how urgent it is.
How much does loading dock repair cost? It depends on the equipment, the fault, parts and access. Ask about any diagnostic fee, parts, and whether the price is an estimate or a final quote. The cost section above lists the questions.
Does a dock or door company need a license in Idaho? Contractors register with the state. Electrical work takes an Idaho electrical license and a permit bought before work starts. You can check a registration on DOPL's public search.
Do I need a permit to replace a commercial overhead door in Boise? We didn't find a published Boise rule for that exact job. Ask the provider whether your job needs a building or electrical permit and who pulls it. The City of Boise decides.
Is a dock leveler the same as a dock plate? No. A leveler is built into the dock. A plate or board is a loose piece carried to the edge. See dock levelers and dock plates and boards.
Do you work on residential garage doors or boat docks? No. This is for commercial buildings only.
