A commercial overhead door, also called a sectional door, is a stack of horizontal panels joined by hinges. The panels roll up on tracks and park flat under the ceiling. If your door works that way, you're on the right page. If it does something else, one of these pages fits better.

Operators, controls and safety sensors
The operator is the motor unit that opens the door. Commercial doors often use trolley, jackshaft or hoist operators. The controls, photo eyes and safety edges work with it as one system. The UL 325 standard covers electric door operators and related systems rated 600 volts or less (UL 325).
Tell the provider what the operator does: hums, clicks, runs without moving the door, or reverses. Don't bypass a photo eye or safety edge to get the door moving.
Replacing an operator in Idaho. If the job includes electrical work, contracting it takes an Idaho electrical license, and the permit is bought before work starts (§ 54-1002, § 54-1005). Which office issues the permit depends on where the building is (details below). Ask whether the job includes electrical work, who holds the license, and who buys the permit.

Idaho checks for overhead door work

- Registration. Idaho contractors register with the state, and repair counts as construction. The under-$2,000 exemption covers only casual, minor jobs, not part of a bigger project (§ 54-5205). Check a number on DOPL's registration search.
- Electrical permit issuer. Meridian and Nampa issue their own electrical permits, and Caldwell accepts applications through its Building Safety portal. In unincorporated Canyon County the state handles them (Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell, Canyon County).
- Codes. Idaho is on the 2018 building and fire codes and the 2023 electrical code. The 2024 update was rejected in committee in February 2026 (DOPL, Boise).
- Permits. None of the Treasure Valley offices we could check publishes a door-replacement rule. Ask the provider, and let the office decide.
