Dock plate or dock board? The difference decides everything

"Dock plate," "dock board," and "bridge plate" can describe different products. In the industry they usually mean two different classes of product with two different ratings.

  • A dock plate is typically the lighter product, made for hand-pushed equipment — pallet jacks, hand trucks, carts.
  • A dock board is typically the heavier product, built with side curbs and higher capacity, made for powered equipment like forklifts.

Manufacturers are explicit about this. Bluff’s aluminum dock plates Model A and B are for manual handling equipment, not forklifts or motorized equipment. Its aluminum dock boards include models intended for forklift use, subject to their own capacities and application limits. Its mounted spring-loaded Model SL plate is for hand trucks, dollies, and carts — not pallet jacks or powered equipment. The actual model matters.

That means the word on the shelf tag does not tell you what may drive across it. The product's own rating does. If nobody at your facility can point to a capacity plate, a manual, or a purchase record, you do not currently know what that device is approved to carry — and that is a real problem worth a call, even before anything bends.

Can a bent dock plate or board be repaired?

Sometimes. The model, damage, and manufacturer’s repair instructions decide. This page cannot approve a repair from a description.

Here is why the question is harder than it looks. These devices carry a rated load across an unsupported span, with people and equipment on top. That rating comes from the manufacturer's design: material, thickness, weld pattern, curb height, the lot. Heating it, straightening it, welding a plate over the damage, or fabricating a replacement out of whatever thickness is in the shop changes the thing the rating was based on.

Do not treat "we can just weld it" as approval to use the device again. A repair needs model-specific support and a qualified assessment; an improvised weld does not establish capacity.

What a qualified provider works through:

  1. What device is this, exactly — make, model, rated capacity, intended handling equipment
  2. What is the damage — a bent lip edge and a deformed main span are not the same finding
  3. Does the manufacturer support a repair for this product and this damage
  4. What drives across it — hand equipment and a loaded forklift are different worlds
  5. Is replacement simply the right answer — when an approved repair cannot be established, it needs to be considered

Ask for that reasoning in writing. A proposal that says "repair dock board" without naming the device or the damage is not enough to authorize.

Do not test it. Not with a pallet jack, not with a partly loaded forklift, not "just to see." A damaged device can fail under load and expose people to a fall or collapse.

What OSHA's dockboard rule actually says

Check the intended load, runoff protection, securement, and handling requirements before approving a replacement. The rule uses the date of initial service, not the purchase date.

OSHA's dockboard rule (29 CFR 1910.26) requires:

  • Dockboards must be capable of supporting the maximum intended load.
  • Under paragraph (b), dockboards put into initial service on or after January 17, 2017 must be designed to prevent transfer vehicles from running off the edge. Paragraph (b)(2) permits an exception where the employer demonstrates no runoff hazard. The rule does not prescribe side curbs at both ends of every device.
  • Portable dockboards must be secured to prevent movement from a safe position. Paragraph (c) allows an alternative where securement is infeasible and sufficient contact prevents displacement.
  • Measures must prevent transport vehicles from moving while employees are on the dockboard; restraints are a separate equipment family.
  • Portable dockboards need handholds or another means for safe handling. This is not an instruction to move a damaged device yourself.

An older purchase date does not establish that a device is safe or compliant. Ask the supplier and your safety team to document the replacement’s intended use, load rating, and how the runoff and securement requirements apply.

MHI publishes ANSI MH30.2 for portable dock leveling devices, separate from the standards covering installed levelers and vehicle restraints (MHI loading-dock equipment standards).

We are not making a determination about your device or your dock. These are the published rules and where to read them. Your provider and your safety program apply them.

What happens when you call

  1. You call and describe the facility location and the observable problem.
  2. Your call may be shared with an independent commercial dock-and-door repair company.
  3. That provider confirms whether it can take the work and agrees scope, availability, pricing, scheduling, and terms with your facility before anything is authorized.

Example of what to say (wording, not a real job): "We have a bent dock board at our Chattanooga warehouse and nobody here knows what it is rated for."

If you reach voicemail, leave the facility address, the door or dock number if known, what's wrong, and a callback number.

Call and describe the device and what drives across it.

What to have ready — and what you do not need

Helpful if you have it: the make and model from a capacity plate you can already read, a manual, or a purchase record · what normally drives across it · existing records of the gap or application, if available · what happened to it.

Not needed: a measurement you would have to take by climbing on it · a load test · a photo taken from the drive approach · a capacity you are guessing at.

Please do not guess at a capacity. "I think it's a 15,000 pound board" from memory is worse than "I don't know" — one sends a provider in with an assumption, the other sends them in to find out.

Keep people clear of the affected equipment. Do not force it or keep cycling it. Follow your facility's established process for taking the affected bay or opening out of use. Have authorized personnel isolate the damaged device under that process so it cannot be reused; do not move it yourself to prepare for the call.

What affects cost, and when does replacement make sense?

We can't quote your exact repair from a web page. The price depends on the equipment, the fault, parts, and access. Here's what to ask before you authorize work.

Replacement is an option to compare when the damage, missing identification, or manufacturer’s instructions prevent an approved repair. Ask what supports the decision for this specific device.

Local checks before you authorize work

Start by distinguishing portable equipment procurement from work that changes a mounted device or the building. That distinction gives the issuing office a useful scope to review.

For a portable replacement, ask the supplier for capacity documentation and the manufacturer’s use limits in writing. Ask the facility’s responsible office whether any approval applies to the proposed work; this page does not infer a permit exemption from the word portable. Keep the equipment records available to the dock supervisor.

Where it does change: if the work becomes a mounted device attached to the building, or you move to an installed leveler, ask whether the scope alters the structure or requires building or trade approval. Start with — the Land Development Office inside Chattanooga, Hamilton County Building Inspection for unincorporated parcels (which publishes that a permit is required for any new work, alteration, addition, or repair to a structure), a city office in Soddy-Daisy or East Ridge, or the county or city office on the Georgia side.

We checked these offices on September 17, 2026. We do not determine what applies to your project — the provider and the issuing office confirm that.

What this page covers — and what it does not

Covered: portable and mounted dock plates and boards, their identification, condition assessment, repair-versus-replacement decisions, and fit to the opening.

Scope exclusions. Commercial facilities only. Not residential garages; boat docks or boat lifts; truck or trailer cargo doors; pedestrian storefront, automatic-entry, glass, or hollow-metal walk-through doors and their locks or closers; parts-only orders; or structural concrete, pit, and slab work.

No capacity is certified here, and no device is cleared for return to service from a phone description. Rail boards and yard ramps are different equipment with different specialists.

Where facilities can call from

Hamilton, Marion, and Sequatchie counties in Tennessee, and Catoosa, Dade, and Walker counties in Georgia — including Ooltewah, Soddy-Daisy, East Ridge, Ringgold, and Rossville. See the full service area.

Questions before you call

Is "dock plate repair" the same as dock leveler repair?

Not necessarily. A dock leveler is an installed deck-and-lip system. A plate or board is a different bridging product, and some plates are mounted rather than loose. Describe the actual device and what stopped working so the provider can confirm the scope.

Can every dock plate carry a forklift?

No. Manufacturers publish some aluminum dock plate models for manual material handling equipment only, expressly excluding forklifts and other motorized equipment. The model's own rating decides, not the word "plate" or "board."

Can you tell us to weld or straighten a damaged board?

No. No web page can establish an approved repair or a safe return to service for a device it has not seen. Ask for model-specific assessment and a clear repair-or-replace recommendation with reasoning.

We cannot find any capacity marking. What now?

That is worth a call on its own. Do not load an unidentified device on an assumed capacity. Ask the provider or manufacturer whether its identity and rating can be established from reliable records; otherwise discuss a documented replacement suited to the application.

Does a new board have to have side curbs?

OSHA paragraph 1910.26(b) requires runoff-preventing design for dockboards first put into service on or after January 17, 2017, unless the employer demonstrates no runoff hazard under (b)(2). It does not specify side curbs at both ends of every board. Ask how the proposed product and your actual application meet the rule.
