Plate, board, or installed leveler?
A dock plate or dock board is portable equipment. Somebody moves it into position between the dock floor and the trailer bed, and moves it out again. An installed dock leveler is part of the building — it lives in a pit or bolts to the dock face and hinges down.
Here's the confusing part, and it's the reason this page exists: OSHA's definition in 29 CFR 1910.21 uses the word dockboard to cover both fixed and portable devices. So the regulation treats them under one heading while the repair questions are completely different.

Capacity, marking and rated use
Every portable device has a rated capacity, and that rating is the whole safety question. The marking is how you know it.
Two things get people into trouble here.
Plates and boards are not interchangeable products. Some portable devices are rated for hand trucks and pallet jacks only. Others are built for powered lift trucks. Material doesn't tell you which — an aluminum device can be either, depending on how it was built and what the manufacturer rated it for. The marking and the manufacturer's documentation decide. How it looks does not.
A missing or unreadable marking is itself the problem. If nobody can read what the device is rated for, nobody can establish that the traffic crossing it is inside that rating. That's not a paperwork issue — it's the reason to stop using it and get it identified or replaced.
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.26 sets employer duties for portable and fixed dockboards: rated use, run-off protection where it applies, securing portable devices, and preventing transport-vehicle movement. The rule carries specific exceptions and allows other safe means of handling portable units. The MHI/ANSI MH30 series treats portable dock devices as their own equipment category.

Can a damaged plate be repaired?
Here is the most dangerous wrong answer in this whole trade: "we'll weld it and put it back."
Never assume a damaged portable device can be welded, straightened, or returned to service — and never assume a forklift can cross it afterwards. Whether any repair is acceptable comes from the manufacturer's documentation for that specific device and your obligations as the employer. It does not come from a web page, and it does not come from whoever has a welder on site.

The honest version of the answer: a lot of damaged portable devices get replaced rather than repaired, because establishing that a repair restored the rating is often harder and more expensive than buying a new one that comes with documentation. A good provider will tell you that plainly.
While it's out of service: move it out of the traffic path if that can be done safely with the right equipment, tag it so nobody grabs it, and don't improvise a substitute bridge for that bay. Follow your facility's normal process for taking the position out of use.
If a plate failed under a lift truck, say that first.

Questions about dock plates and boards
Can a bent dock plate be straightened and reused?
Don't assume so. A bend usually means the device saw a load or an impact it wasn't built for, and straightening steel does not automatically restore what it was rated to carry. Whether any repair is acceptable comes from the manufacturer's documentation for that device. Take it out of service and get it identified before anyone touches it with a torch.
Is a dock plate the same as a dock leveler?
No — but OSHA's definition covers both under the word "dockboard," which is why crews use the terms interchangeably. A leveler is installed in the building. A plate or board is portable. They're different equipment with different repair answers and different handling duties.
Our plate has no capacity marking. Can we still use it?
That's the problem, not a detail. Without a legible marking, nobody can demonstrate that the traffic crossing it is within the device's rating — which is exactly what OSHA 1910.26 asks of you. Take it out of service and get the device identified or replaced with one that arrives documented.
Can a forklift drive over a dock plate?
Only if that specific device is rated for powered equipment and is in sound condition. Some portable devices are built for hand trucks and pallet jacks and nothing heavier. You cannot tell which by looking at it, and material doesn't tell you either. Read the marking, or don't run a lift truck across it.
