A dock plate or dock board is a portable bridge. It is a loose steel or aluminum plate laid across the gap between the dock and the trailer, then picked up and moved to another door. A dock leveler is built into the dock, either in a pit or on the dock face. They do the same job but are different equipment with different repair questions.

In the OSHA rule for powered industrial trucks, 29 CFR 1910.178(j) is only a heading, "Dockboards (bridge plates)." The requirements themselves are in 1910.26 (29 CFR 1910.178).
