Is it a dock plate, a dock board, or a leveler?
A dock plate or dock board is a loose, portable bridge. Someone lays it between the dock and the trailer bed. A dock leveler is different: it's built into the dock and lifts and extends a lip. Plates and boards have their own standard, ANSI MH30.2 (2022), which covers portable dock loading devices.
What's the difference between a plate and a board? The standard sorts them by how they're built, not by a rule about who may use them. Manufacturers often describe plates as lighter bridges for hand trucks and pallet jacks, and boards as heavier bridges built for forklifts. That's a manufacturer description, not a law. The rating label on your device is what counts.

Can loading continue while a plate or board is damaged?
A web page can't clear a damaged plate or board for use. Take it out of service using your facility's process, and keep it that way until someone qualified has looked at it. Follow your facility's affected-bay process. Qualified personnel decide whether an approved alternative is available.
Here's what OSHA's dockboard rule, 29 CFR 1910.26, says for employers, in plain words:
- (a) Dockboards must be able to carry the maximum load they're meant for.
- (b) Dockboards put into service after January 17, 2017 need run-off protection, so vehicles can't roll off the edge, unless the employer shows there's no such hazard.
- (c) Portable dockboards are secured by anchoring, or with devices that keep them from moving out of a safe position.
- (d) Measures such as wheel chocks or sand shoes keep the trailer from moving while employees are on the dockboard.
- (e) Portable dockboards have handholds or another way to handle them safely.
Two more OSHA rules apply at the dock. 29 CFR 1910.178(k)(1) says the brakes of highway trucks shall be set and wheel chocks placed under the rear wheels while forklifts board them. And 29 CFR 1910.28(b)(4) covers fall protection for employees on a dockboard, with a stated exception.
These are the employer's duties. They aren't repair instructions.

Can a damaged dock plate be repaired?
Sometimes. It depends on the damage, the design and what the manufacturer allows. A qualified provider or the manufacturer decides whether a device can be repaired and still carry its rated load, or whether it has to be replaced. Don't assume a bent or cracked plate can be welded and put back in service.
Things that usually decide it:
- Where the damage is. A bent handle is different from a cracked deck.
- The material. Aluminum and steel plates are repaired differently, if at all.
- The rating. A repair has to keep the device able to carry what its label says.
- The manufacturer. Some makers say not to modify their products without written approval.
- Cost. Plates and boards are often cheaper to replace than to repair.
