Where the commercial work is concentrated: the Northwest Quadrant on Salt Lake City's west side, the airport corridor, the 5600 West and 7200 West corridors, West Valley City's industrial district, the older warehouse belt through South Salt Lake and Salt Lake City's west side, and the I-215 and Bangerter corridors.
One thing worth knowing before you call a permit office. In Salt Lake County the building permit does not always come from the city on your mailing label. Magna, Kearns, White City, Emigration Canyon, Copperton, Brighton and all unincorporated Salt Lake County go through the Greater Salt Lake Municipal Services District, a special district with offices in Taylorsville. Everywhere else, it is that city's own building division.
Murray
Murray is the metro's second principal city in the federal delineation, not a neighborhood of Salt Lake City. It has its own Building Division, and it runs its own permit intake. Commercial bays, service-bay doors and dock equipment at Murray facilities are all in scope — just use Murray's office, not Salt Lake City's, for the permit question.
The rest of the valley
West Jordan, Taylorsville, Sandy, South Jordan, Riverton, Herriman, Bluffdale, Midvale, Millcreek, Holladay, Cottonwood Heights and Draper each run their own building divisions. Kearns, White City, Copperton, Brighton and Emigration Canyon go through the MSD. Alta and the canyon communities are taken case by case — give the actual facility address and any access requirements you already know.

Tooele County carries real industrial weight for its size. Peterson Industrial Depot in Tooele lists roughly 44 buildings and about 2.3 million square feet of industrial and warehouse space with on-site rail. Ninigret Depot sits nearby. There is a large distribution center just outside Grantsville, and Tooele Army Depot is in the valley as well.
Two Tooele County differences worth knowing.
First, the permit sequence. In unincorporated Tooele County, the site plan has to be approved by the Tooele County Fire Department before Community Development will accept the building permit application (Tooele County building permit instructions, checked September 17, 2026). That is a step Salt Lake County does not have, and it changes your lead time on a replacement. Tooele City and Grantsville run their own permitting.
Second, access. Tooele Army Depot and Dugway Proving Ground are federal installations with their own access rules, escort requirements and site procedures. Those are taken case by case. Give the actual address and whatever site requirements you already know, and let the provider confirm what it can do.
