Do not force a jammed curtain, and do not keep running the operator to work it loose. The counterbalance inside the barrel is a spring system under load, and a curtain out of its guides can come down. Keep people and vehicles clear, take the opening out of use the way your facility normally does, and describe it on the phone. A qualified provider inspects the barrel, the counterbalance and anything electrical. Do not approach them to gather information for a service call.
Self-storage, secure openings and sheet doors
Commercial self-storage is in scope here. So are secure openings inside industrial buildings, counter shutters and grilles.
What changes the conversation on these is scale and repetition. One jammed unit door is one job. Twelve doors that are all getting hard to lift is a different call, and worth saying up front — it changes how the provider plans the visit and what it is likely to cost per opening. What affects the price

Repair it, or replace it?
- Where the damage is. Curtain damage is often repairable. Bent guides and a damaged barrel move you toward replacement faster.
- Whether the slat profile is still made. Ask directly. Older profiles are the usual sticking point.
- How many times this opening has been hit. If a forklift keeps catching the same door, guarding or a bumper may be the real fix.
- What the opening has to do now. More cycles, heavier traffic or a security requirement can change the specification.
- Whether it is rated. If it is a fire-rated assembly, replacement is not a like-for-like shopping exercise → rolling fire door.
Utah rules that affect this door
Who can do the work. Check the licence and classification in the DOPL lookup under "Verify a License." Utah contractor numbers end in -5501. The classification whose written scope lists "garage doors, doors" is S220 – Carpentry and Flooring Contractor (R156-55a-301, Table 1); whether it covers your job is for DOPL and the company to confirm.
Electrical is separate. If the door has a motor operator and the work involves new power, a new circuit or building wiring, that is electrical work under a separate classification, and it stays that way even under the state's small-job licensing exemption (Utah Code § 58-55-305(1)(h)(ii)(A)).

What is the difference between a roll-up door and a rolling steel door?
People use them interchangeably. Both describe a curtain that coils above the opening. The distinction that actually matters for the repair is whether the curtain is made of interlocking steel slats or one formed sheet, because the parts and the fix are different.
Can bent slats be replaced without replacing the whole curtain?
Often yes, if the slat profile is still available and the guides and barrel came through the impact intact. Once the curtain is twisted or the guide is bent, that changes. Have it assessed before assuming either answer.
How do I tell whether my rolling door is fire-rated?
