Say whether existing records or a safely known label identify a fire rating. You do not need to approach the door to find out.
A label or building record identifying a fire rating means the opening needs the fire-door scope. Automatic release may use a fusible link, a detector or an alarm connection; a visible fusible link is not required to recognize the possibility of a rated assembly. A fire door that has dropped should not be reset as a routine task.

Roll-up, rolling steel, coiling or sheet — what's the difference?
They're all curtains that coil, but the construction matters for the repair.
Rolling steel service doors use heavy-gauge interlocking slats. Endlocks fitted according to the door design limit lateral movement of the slats. Their spacing and arrangement depend on the manufacturer and model. These are the doors on warehouse, industrial and exterior commercial openings.
Sheet doors are one continuous corrugated panel rather than separate slats. Used on commercial self-storage and smaller commercial buildings; construction and rating depend on the model. A dent in a sheet door is a different repair question from a bent slat.
Counter shutters are short rolling doors over a service counter or opening. Same family, smaller scale.
Insulated rolling doors add a core between skins. Heavier, and the slat profile matters more when you're sourcing parts.

A door that has become hard to move, or that drops fast, needs assessment before further use. A qualified provider may find a counterbalance, guide, curtain or drive problem. Keep people clear, stop operating it and take the bay out of use through your own process. Leave barrel tension and other stored-energy work to trained service personnel.

Operators and chain hoists on roll-up doors
Rolling doors are driven three ways: by hand, by a chain hoist (a hand chain geared down so one person can move a heavy curtain), or by a motorised operator.
A motorised vehicular rolling door needs the control and entrapment-protection arrangement specified for its operator. DASMA TDS 382 describes constant-pressure-to-close-only operation or compatible monitored external protection for other closing modes on post-August-2010 operators. Report changed behaviour; do not defeat a protective device. The overhead door page explains the distinction.
One practical thing: do not compensate for a newly hard-to-operate manual or chain-hoist door by pulling harder. A qualified provider can assess the counterbalance, guides, curtain and hoist. Report the changed behaviour and keep the opening out of use through your facility's process.

Ask which kind of number you're being given — a diagnostic fee, a starting price, a scoped fixed price, an estimate, or a final quote.
Repair or replace? It comes down to how much of the curtain is damaged, whether that slat profile is still manufactured, and what shape the guides and jambs are in. Ask whether compatible replacement slats and guide repairs can restore the assembly, and compare that written scope with a replacement proposal. The licence. CSLB D-28 — Doors, Gates and Activating Devices covers commercial and industrial door repair, including these. C-10 — Electrical covers electrical wiring and equipment; ask which classification covers the specific operator or circuit work. Check any company: CSLB licence lookup.
The permit. Ask the responsible building department about the specific curtain repair, assembly replacement, changed opening or operator wiring. Roll-up door questions
Can a bent slat be replaced without replacing the whole curtain?
Usually, if it's a few slats, the profile is still manufactured, and the guides are straight. Slats come out of the curtain individually. What kills a slat repair is a bent guide or a twisted barrel that will just damage the new slats too — which is why a provider looks at the whole assembly, not only the dent.
My roll-up door is really hard to pull down. Is that normal?
No—new resistance or uncontrolled movement is a reason to stop and report the door. The cause can involve the counterbalance, guides, curtain or drive, and needs qualified assessment. Forcing it can worsen damage and put people at risk.
Is a sheet door the same as a rolling steel door?
Not quite. A sheet door is one continuous corrugated panel; a rolling steel door is made of separate interlocking slats with endlocks. Both coil around a barrel, both are commercial, but they take different parts and a dent behaves differently on each.
Do you work on the roll-up doors on our trailers?
No. Building-mounted doors only. A trailer's cargo door is a vehicle component — call a trailer service shop for that one.
