Pierce County focus, wider metro requests

Pierce County is the focus of this Tacoma hub. The wider Seattle–Tacoma–Bellevue metropolitan area includes King, Pierce and Snohomish counties, as listed by BLS under the federal delineation. The Tacoma–Lakewood Metropolitan Division is Pierce County; it is not the whole metro.

Where the permit actually comes from

For the same commercial door job, the building permit and electrical permit can come from two different offices. Check the facility’s actual jurisdiction and the electrical issuer separately; a utility service area is not always a city boundary.

L&I's own page puts the electrical side plainly: Tacoma Power "issues permits and performs inspections for properties they serve in the cities of Tacoma, Fircrest, University Place, Fife, parts of Steilacoom, Lakewood, and unincorporated Pierce County as far south as Roy," and it adds: "Please verify jurisdiction before obtaining a permit to avoid delays and refund processing fees" (L&I, City Electrical Permits & Inspections).

A mailing address that says “Puyallup” or “Tacoma” does not always mean the city issues the permit. The parcel decides. Use Pierce County’s property and permitting lookup to identify the jurisdiction before applying.

Tacoma and the Tideflats

Call about Tacoma’s Tideflats, Port of Tacoma industrial area and South Tacoma commercial buildings. Nearby Ruston, Browns Point, Dash Point and Fife Heights are also named request locations; do not assume a Tacoma mailing label puts each property inside Tacoma city limits.

For a port-area terminal, transload building or cold-storage facility, give the street address, gate and bay if already known. Say whether the fault is in the building door or loading-dock equipment, not a truck or trailer cargo door.

Fife, Sumner and the valley

Fife → — a gateway between the Port of Tacoma and the Pierce–King area. A Fife building-permit question goes to Fife, while Tacoma Power handles electrical permits for the properties it serves here.

Sumner → — the Sumner–Pacific industrial area spans municipalities. Identify the actual address and check Sumner’s construction hours when agreeing a planned shutdown.

Puyallup → — city facilities and nearby South Hill addresses do not necessarily use the same permit office. The city/county distinction matters for a replacement or altered opening.

Also in this area: Edgewood, Milton, Alderton, McMillin and North Puyallup.

South Pierce County

Frederickson → — unincorporated, and in Pierce County's own words, "covering more than 2,000 acres, the Frederickson manufacturing center is one of the principal industrial centers in Pierce County."

Also: Parkland, Spanaway, Midland, Summit and Waller (also described as Summit-Waller), South Hill, Elk Plain, Graham, Clover Creek, Summit View, Prairie Heights, South Creek and Maplewood. These are unincorporated communities — permits go to Pierce County, not to a city.

Lakewood and the I-5 corridor

Lakewood → — fleet, shop and other commercial buildings, including facilities near JBLM and Camp Murray. Confirm base access separately where relevant, and check the electrical issuer because Tacoma Power serves only part of Lakewood.

Also: DuPont, University Place, Fircrest and Steilacoom.

East Pierce and the plateau

Bonney Lake, Tehaleh, Lake Tapps, Prairie Ridge, Orting, Buckley, South Prairie, Wilkeson and Carbonado. For a fleet bay, workshop or municipal building here, give the street address and the kind of opening; the city or unincorporated-county location determines the building office.

Gig Harbor and the peninsulas

Gig Harbor, Artondale, Rosedale, Purdy, Wollochet, Canterwood, Fox Island, Raft Island, Stansberry Lake, and the Key Peninsula — Key Center, Home, Longbranch, Vaughn, Wauna and Herron Island.

A note worth making because of where these places are: "dock" on this site means a loading dock at a commercial building. Boat docks and boat lifts, lake docks, marina structures and anything over water are outside our scope no matter how close the water is.

Gig Harbor runs a combined Building and Fire Safety Division, so the same office handles the building and fire questions — worth knowing if you have a rated opening there.

Rural and island Pierce County

Eatonville, Roy, McKenna, Kapowsin, Alder, Elbe, Ashford, Greenwater, Clear Lake, Crocker, Anderson Island, Ketron Island and La Grande. Smaller commercial and municipal facilities, farther out. Give the address and the provider confirms whether it can take the work.

The Pierce–King county line

Auburn, Pacific and Milton cross the Pierce–King county line. Enumclaw is a separate King County request location. A facility outside Pierce County lies outside the Tacoma–Lakewood Metropolitan Division, but that statistical boundary does not decide a provider’s service area.

Snohomish County requests

The wider metro also includes Snohomish County. Thurston and Kitsap county-edge requests

Lacey, Olympia, Tumwater and Yelm are in Thurston County; Port Orchard, Bremerton and Poulsbo are in Kitsap County.
