Repair or replace?
Compare the failed component with the condition and suitability of the whole door. A compatible curtain, sensor or drive repair may be enough. Repeated failures, unavailable parts or equipment unsuited to the opening can justify comparing a complete replacement.

- Registration. Construction contractors generally register with L&I under RCW 18.27. Look them up. WAC 296-200A-016 includes broad door work at (12), industrial equipment at (29), and specified overhead/roll-up doors at (39). Ask L&I and the contractor which scope fits the actual high-speed assembly; do not assume a fabric door is a steel roll-up door.
- Electrical. High-speed doors combine mechanical equipment with controls. Wiring reaches a separately licensed trade under chapter RCW 19.28, and the electrical permit may come from Tacoma Power, which L&I says issues permits and performs inspections for properties it serves in "the cities of Tacoma, Fircrest, University Place, Fife, parts of Steilacoom, Lakewood, and unincorporated Pierce County as far south as Roy" (L&I). Tacoma Power electrical permitting: 253-502-8277. Tacoma Public Utilities also states that work on services rated over 600 amps requires drawings submitted for plan review.
- Building permit. An unchanged opening does not establish an exemption. Tacoma’s ordinary-repair exception excludes specified structural, egress, electrical, mechanical and public-safety work. Ask Tacoma PDS or the building office for the actual address about the door, mounting and operator scope. Pierce County PPW handles unincorporated addresses.
