Dock seals and shelters
A dock seal and a dock shelter do the same broad job with different hardware. A compression seal uses pads around the opening that contact the trailer. A shelter uses curtains or a hood around the trailer. The right fit depends on the opening, trailer sizes and heights, and the product design—not just the label “seal” or “shelter.”

Dock bumpers
The whole argument for bumpers fits in one sentence: they cushion trailer contact and help protect the dock face and equipment.
A damaged or missing bumper loses that protection. Replacement needs to account for the bumper, its mounting and any damage behind it—not just the price of a rubber block.
What to report: whether the bumper is crushed, split, delaminated, hanging by its fixings, or simply missing, and whether you can see damage to the dock face behind it. That last part matters because it separates two different jobs — replacing a bumper is dock equipment work, and repairing a damaged concrete dock face is a concrete or general contractor's job, which is outside this request service.
On bumpers, replacement is usually the honest answer rather than repair. There is not much to fix on a crushed block.
Dock plates and dock boards
This section covers portable dock plates and dock boards, not the installed leveler mechanism. “Bridge plate” is another name a caller may use, so say whether the device is loose or attached. ANSI MH30.1-2022 covers dock leveling devices and MH30.2-2022 covers portable dock leveling devices; MHI identifies their different scopes. The product’s name alone does not establish its rating or permitted use.
The rating, intended traffic and fit all matter. Bluff’s aluminum dock plates are intended for manually moved equipment, not forklifts; its aluminum dock boards include forklift applications. Those are product examples, not permission to use your device. Confirm its manufacturer’s rating and instructions; “it looks strong enough” is not a rating.
Here is the plain position. A bent, cracked, delaminated or unreadable-rating plate is not assumed safe to weld, straighten, put back in service, or drive a forklift across. Repairability depends on the actual device and what its manufacturer supports. Nothing on this page authorizes a repair. That is a decision for a qualified provider and your facility, working from the device in front of them.

Rules that apply to dock equipment
29 CFR 1910.26 covers dockboards. 29 CFR 1910.28 covers fall protection, with conditional exceptions around loading docks. 29 CFR 1910.178 covers powered industrial trucks. Portable dock devices sit under ANSI MH30.2, published through MHI — we name it because knowing which standard covers your device is useful, not to quote requirements out of it.
On the Arizona side, check the company’s commercial or dual license in the Registrar of Contractors lookup and ask which classification covers the proposed components and mounting work. New or altered electrical wiring raises a separate C-11 or CR-11 scope question. Dock equipment questions in Phoenix
Can a bent dock plate be straightened and reused?
Do not assume it can. A portable plate is a rated device, and whether any repair is appropriate depends on that specific device and what its manufacturer supports. Replacement is often the real question. Take it out of service, do not run a forklift across it, and let a qualified provider look at the actual plate.
Is a torn dock seal urgent, or can it wait?
It depends how much is torn and what the opening needs to do. Loose fabric can catch and tear further; gaps can affect a conditioned building’s temperature control. Report the visible damage and bay number, and ask the provider about assessment and availability.
How do I know what capacity our dock plate is rated for?
It should be stamped or labelled on the device. If you cannot read it from where you normally stand, do not go handling the plate to find out. An unreadable rating is itself a finding worth reporting — a device whose capacity nobody can confirm is not a device you can plan around.
