- Inside Huntsville city limits: the City of Huntsville Inspection Division issues permits for alterations and repairs as well as new work (City of Huntsville permits). The city's general commercial building-permit fee is the total contract price times 0.0055 (permit costs). That fee applies only when a building permit is needed. It's not a door price.
- Inside the City of Madison: the Madison Building Department handles commercial permits. Madison is in both Madison and Limestone counties, so check the parcel. See Madison, AL.
- Inside Athens: the Athens Building Department takes permits online through its portal. See Athens, AL.
- Unincorporated Madison County: the county says commercial work needs a permit regardless of cost, including replacement (Madison County FAQ).
- Unincorporated Limestone County: ask the installer to confirm with the county.
