Which places are included?
The Huntsville metro area is two counties: Madison County and Limestone County (OMB Bulletin 23-01, July 2023). Facilities anywhere in those two counties can call. Places just outside can call too, and each one gets looked at case by case.
City lines and county lines don't match here. Huntsville reaches into Limestone County, and the City of Madison sits in both counties. That matters most for permits, so the table below covers it.

Madison County
Cities and towns: Huntsville, Madison, New Hope, Gurley, Owens Cross Roads and Triana. The county lists these six as its incorporated cities (Madison County). Each has its own permit office or process.
Unincorporated communities: Harvest, Hazel Green, Meridianville, Toney, New Market, Monrovia and Moores Mill. These are well-known community names, not separate cities. Unless a site has been annexed into a city, permit questions go to Madison County. The county says commercial work needs a permit regardless of cost, including repair and replacement (Madison County commercial inspection FAQ).
Commercial areas people name: Cummings Research Park, Jetplex Industrial Park and the International Intermodal Center at Huntsville International Airport, North Huntsville Industrial Park and Chase Industrial Park. If the facility is on Redstone Arsenal, say so when you call. Contractors without a Defense Department ID go through the Arsenal's visitor process (Redstone Arsenal visitor access).
Limestone County
Cities and towns: Athens, the county seat, plus Ardmore, Elkmont, Lester and Mooresville. Parts of Huntsville, Madison and Decatur also sit in Limestone County (Athens-Limestone Chamber).
Unincorporated communities: Tanner, Belle Mina, Capshaw and Greenbrier, among others. For permit questions outside city limits, ask the company to confirm with Limestone County. We couldn't confirm the county's commercial permit rule from its website, so we won't guess.
Commercial areas people name: SouthPoint Business Park at I-65 and I-565, and the Greenbrier Parkway and Greenbrier Road corridor. Parts of the Greenbrier corridor are inside Huntsville city limits even where mailing addresses say Madison. The county's economic development group says Limestone County's industrial parks sit along I-65 and I-565 (LCEDA).
