Which dock or door problem are you calling about?
Most calls come down to four things: a dock door, a dock leveler, a sectional overhead door or a roll-up door. You don't need the right name to call. Say what you see and which bay it is.
The table can help if you want to point to the right equipment. If it doesn't fit, skip it and call.
| What it looks like (or what you call it) | Service | What to mention on the call | Not this, if… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Door at a truck bay made of panels that ride up on side tracks (dock door, bay door, loading door, overhead door, sectional door) | Commercial garage & overhead door repair | Bay number. Stuck open, closed or partway. Was it hit? | It's a home garage door. That's residential work. |
| Door that rolls up into a drum above the opening (roll-up, rolling steel, coiling door, sheet door) | Roll-up & rolling-steel door repair | Where the curtain stopped. Any bent slats. | It has a fire label. See fire doors below. |
| Steel ramp set into the dock floor that bridges to the trailer (dock leveler: hydraulic, mechanical or air-powered) | Dock leveler repair | Stuck up, stuck down, lip won't come out, or a leak. | The problem is cracked concrete or the pit itself. That's structural work. |
| Small hinged plate mounted right at the dock edge (edge-of-dock leveler) | Dock leveler repair | Same as above. | — |
| Loose metal plate or board laid across the gap by hand or forklift (dock plate, dock board) | Dock plates and dock boards | What damage you can see. That it's out of use. | Don't try to straighten or weld it. |
| Foam pads or a fabric curtain around the bay opening (dock seal, dock shelter) | Dock seals and shelters | Torn, flat or hanging. Which bay. | — |
| Rubber blocks on the dock face (dock bumpers) | Dock bumpers | Missing, cracked or worn thin. | — |
| Hook or arm that holds the trailer, with red and green lights (trailer restraint, vehicle restraint, truck restraint, dock lock) | Vehicle restraints | Won't grab, won't let go, or the lights look wrong. | It's a door on the truck or trailer itself. |
| Fast fabric or rigid door, often at a freezer or busy inside opening (high-speed door) | High-speed doors | It won't cycle, or the curtain came out of its guides. | — |
| Rolling door built to close by itself in a fire (fire-rated rolling door) | Rolling fire door repair | It failed a test, didn't close, or showed up on an inspection report. | — |
| Motor unit, push buttons, photo-eyes (commercial opener, operator, controls, sensors) | Openers, operators and sensors | It hums, reverses or doesn't respond. | — |
How do I tell a sectional door from a rolling door?
A sectional door is made of wide panels. It rides up on tracks and lies flat under the ceiling when open. A rolling door is made of thin slats or a sheet. It wraps around a drum above the opening, usually inside a metal hood. You can tell which one you have from the floor. Don't open a hood or climb up to look.
Where does a leveler end and a dock plate begin?
A dock leveler is built into the dock. It stays put and is usually run by a button, a pull chain or an air bag. A dock plate or dock board is portable. People carry it or lift it into place. Different decisions follow: a damaged portable plate is often simply replaced. The company that takes the job confirms the actual scope.
Not sure which one it is? Say what you see, and give the bay number.
What happened at the loading bay?
Describe the symptom, not the cause. A qualified technician figures out what actually broke after seeing it. Here are common problems and what's useful to report. It's a guide for the call, not a diagnosis.
| What you see | What a qualified provider may look at | Why it matters | How to say it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Door won't open, or goes up a few inches and stops | Springs, cables, the operator | A broken spring or cable can let a door drop | "Bay 2 won't lift. We heard a bang." |
| Door stuck open | Operator, tracks, cables, safety devices | The building is open to weather and theft | "Stuck open." Say it first. |
| Door hanging crooked or off its track | Tracks, rollers, cables, panels | A door off its track can fall | "Door 5 is crooked. We've kept people away." |
| Door hit by a forklift or trailer | Panels, tracks, slats, guides | Running a damaged door can make it worse | "Impact at door 6. We're not running it." |
| Opener hums, stops or reverses | Operator, photo-eyes, controls | The safety devices may be doing their job | "It reverses before it closes." |
| Leveler won't rise or won't come down | Hydraulics or springs, controls | The bay is out of service | "Leveler at dock 3 is stuck down." |
| Leveler lip won't come out | Lip, hinge, hydraulics | Loading across a gap isn't safe | "The lip won't extend." |
| Oil or fluid under the leveler | Hydraulic system | Leaks point to a failing part | "Fluid in the pit at dock 4." |
| Seal torn or shelter curtain hanging | Pads, curtains, frame | Heat, cold, rain and pests get in | "Shelter curtain torn at bay 8." |
| Trailer restraint won't let go, or won't grab | Restraint, controls, lights | The trailer can't leave, or isn't held | "Restraint won't release the trailer." |
| Fire door didn't close in a test, or is on an inspection report | Closing parts and release device | It's life-safety equipment | "Our rolling fire door failed its drop test." |
Keep it safe while you wait. Keep people and forklifts clear. Don't force the door or the leveler. Follow your facility's process for taking the bay out of use. Leave springs, cables, hydraulics and wiring to a trained technician. They store a lot of force.
What if the warehouse door is stuck open?
A stuck-open door leaves the building exposed. Report that first. Keep people out from under the door. Don't try to pull it down or run it again. Then give the address and door number so the company that takes the call knows how urgent it is.
What if the dock leveler is down?
Say which dock. Say whether the deck is stuck up or down, and whether the lip is out. Mention if a trailer is at the bay and if loading has stopped. If the trailer restraint or its lights are acting up too, say so. Those systems can be tied together.
Need emergency dock door repair in Huntsville?
If a dock door is stuck open, a leveler is stuck, or a door was hit, call (385) 325-7138 and say that first. Give the facility address and the bay number. The independent company that takes the work confirms whether it can come out and when.
What to report first
- Where the door or dock is now: stuck open, stuck closed or partway.
- The bay or door number.
- What happened: an impact, a loud bang, it stopped halfway.
- Whether trucks or trailers are waiting.
- Who on site can meet the technician.
If anyone is hurt, call 911 first. We're a request line, not emergency services.
While you wait
- Keep people and forklifts away from the opening.
- Don't run a damaged door up and down.
- Don't try to lower a door with a broken spring or cable.
- Don't stand or work under a raised leveler deck.
- Use your facility's own process to take the bay out of use.
What we can't promise
We don't post response times, and we don't promise emergency dispatch. Timing depends on the independent company that takes the job. That company confirms it with you directly.
If the dock is down, say so first.
Which facilities and equipment does this cover?
This line is for commercial buildings. It covers loading-dock equipment and building-mounted commercial doors at warehouses, distribution centers, plants, cold storage, food and beverage sites, fleet garages, auto-service bays, workshops and commercial self-storage. Your building doesn't have to be a big distribution center.
What's included
- Dock doors and commercial overhead doors: sectional doors, insulated steel doors, high-lift and vertical-lift doors, full-view doors, bay doors at fleet and auto shops.
- Roll-up doors: rolling steel service doors, roll-up sheet doors at self-storage buildings, rolling grilles and counter shutters.
- High-speed doors: fabric and rigid fast doors, including freezer and cooler openings.
- Fire-rated rolling doors: repair and the testing questions that come with them.
- Dock levelers: hydraulic, mechanical, air-powered, edge-of-dock and vertical-storing.
- Dock plates and dock boards.
- Dock seals, dock shelters and dock bumpers.
- Trailer and vehicle restraints, dock locks, wheel chocks, dock lights and communication lights.
- Openers, operators, controls, photo-eyes and sensors on the doors and docks above.
- Planned maintenance and new door installation or replacement.
What's not covered
- Home garage doors
- Boat docks and boat lifts
- Doors on trucks and trailers
- Storefront, automatic-entry, glass and hollow-metal walk-through doors, and their locks and closers
- Orders for parts only
- Concrete, pit and slab repair
For a home garage door, call a residential garage-door company. For a storefront or entry door, call a commercial door-and-hardware company or locksmith.
If your equipment is on the list, the next step is a phone call.
What happens when you call?
You call (385) 325-7138 and describe the problem and the facility. Your call may be shared with an independent commercial dock-and-door repair company. That company confirms whether it can take the job, and it sets the scope, price and schedule. Uptime doesn't repair equipment.
Uptime Dock & Door is an independent commercial service-request website for loading-dock and commercial door repair.
- Call and describe it. The equipment, or what it looks like. The bay. What happened.
- Your call may be shared. It may go to an independent commercial dock-and-door repair company.
- That company confirms the details. Whether it can take the job, the scope, the price, the timing and its own terms.
For example, you might say: "Bay 4 is stuck halfway open at our warehouse in Huntsville, and I can give you the address."
If you reach voicemail, leave the facility address, the door or dock number if known, what's wrong, and a callback number.
Want the details? Read how Uptime works and who we are.
Call with the address and bay number.
What should I have ready when I call?
Nothing is required. The facility location, the bay number and "stuck open" are enough to start. The list below just helps if you already know it.
- The facility address and which gate or dock entrance to use
- The bay or door number
- The equipment type, if you know it
- The brand or model, but only if you already know it or can read it safely from a distance
- The door size, if it's on file
- Whether the door has a fire label
Don't walk up to a damaged door, a raised leveler or a stuck restraint to look for a nameplate. You can call without a model number, a photo or a measurement.
Facilities on Redstone Arsenal and other secured sites
If the facility is on Redstone Arsenal, say so on the call. Contractors and vendors without a Department of Defense ID go through the Arsenal's visitor process, which includes a background check at the Gate 9 Visitor Control Center (Redstone Arsenal visitor access). Your site and the company that takes the work arrange that access. The same goes for any gated or badged facility.
What affects the price of a dock or door repair?
We can't quote your exact repair from a web page. The price depends on the equipment, the fault, parts, and access. Here's what to ask before you authorize work.
| What drives the price | Why it changes things | Ask before you say yes |
|---|---|---|
| Trip or diagnostic charge | Many companies charge to come out and look | "Is there a trip or diagnostic charge? Does it go toward the repair?" |
| Time of the visit | Some companies charge more at night or on weekends, if they work then at all | "Is there a different rate for this time?" |
| Parts | Springs, cables, panels, slats, hydraulic parts and operators vary a lot | "Is the part on the truck, or does it need to be ordered? How long?" |
| Door size, gauge and insulation | Bigger, heavier doors need heavier parts | "Does the size change which part I need?" |
| Springs | Spring type and cycle life change the cost | "Are you replacing one spring or both? Why?" |
| Opener or operator | Some can be repaired, some can't | "Can the operator be repaired, or does it need replacing?" |
| Leveler type | Hydraulic, mechanical and air levelers fail in different ways | "What failed, and what exactly will you fix?" |
| Fire rating | Rated parts and a test after the repair | "Will you drop-test it after the repair and give me a record?" |
| Access | Lifts, tall doors, a busy bay or a secured site add time | "Do you need a lift or special access?" |
| Permits (mostly replacements) | Some jobs need a city or county permit and fee | "Does this job need a permit? Who pulls it?" |
Price terms get mixed up. A call-out or diagnostic fee is what it costs to come look. A starting price is the lowest a job might cost. An estimate is a best guess. A quote is a price for a defined scope. Ask which one you're getting, and ask what's included: parts, labor, trip, disposal and any retest.
When does replacement make sense?
A provider weighs a few things. Can the parts still be had? Does the door keep failing? How bad is the impact damage? How worn is it from use? Will the new part work with the old operator? For fire-rated rolling doors, the industry guidance is that repair parts come from the original manufacturer (DASMA TDS 271). When they can't be had, replacement is often the answer. If you're planning a new door, see commercial garage door installation.
Call to describe the door problem.
Before you authorize work: the Huntsville-area rulebook
Alabama requires a general contractor license for covered work of $100,000 or more, including repair and maintenance. Starting October 1, 2026, certain routine or regular maintenance, repair, cleaning and facility support work may qualify for an exemption; the Board determines whether a specific project qualifies. Electrical work on door operators and dock controls falls under a separate state electrical board. Whether a job needs a permit depends on the work and on which office covers your address.
We checked these sources on September 23–24, 2026. The company doing the work and the office that issues permits decide what applies to your job.
Three questions to ask
- "Is this job $100,000 or more, and does the new maintenance-and-repair exemption apply?" Alabama's licensing threshold has been $100,000 since October 1, 2024, and it covers maintenance and repair (Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors). Act 2026-396 takes effect October 1, 2026. It adds an exemption for certain routine or regular maintenance, repair, cleaning and facility support work. The Board says the law doesn't define every case and asks contractors to check with it on specific projects (Board notice, September 10, 2026). For a large replacement, ask for the license number and look it up on the Board's site.
- "Who does the electrical work, and are they licensed by the state electrical board?" The Alabama Electrical Contractors Board licenses electrical contractors. Its license covers power and control systems, which includes door operators and dock controls. It has no dollar threshold. You can look up a license.
- "Does this job need a permit, and from which office?" A like-for-like repair, a new operator and a full door replacement can be handled differently. Ask the company, and check with the office below.
Your mailing address may not tell you your permit office
Huntsville's city limits reach into Limestone County. The City of Madison sits in both Madison and Limestone counties. Some sites along the Greenbrier Parkway corridor have a Madison mailing address but are inside Huntsville city limits. The city describes one large plant site there as being in "Huntsville-Limestone County" (City of Huntsville). So check the parcel's city limits first. The county name alone won't tell you.
| If your facility is in… | Office to check | What that office publishes | Where to look |
|---|---|---|---|
| City of Huntsville (Madison or Limestone County side) | City of Huntsville Inspection Division, 305 Fountain Circle | Permits for alterations and repairs as well as new work. Trade permits are pulled by the licensed trade contractor. The city lists the 2018 International Building Code and the 2021 International Fire Code. A city contractor business license is required to work inside city limits. | Permits · Adopted codes · Contractor license search |

| City of Athens | Athens Building Department, 200 W. Hobbs St., and Athens Fire Prevention | Permits, inspections and plan review online. Athens runs on the 2018 International Fire Code. | Athens permit portal · Fire Prevention |
| Unincorporated Madison County | Madison County Building and Fire Inspection | The county says commercial work needs a permit regardless of cost, including repair and replacement. It lists 2018 codes and the 2017 National Electrical Code. | Commercial inspection FAQ |
| Unincorporated Limestone County | Limestone County | Ask the company to confirm the permit question with the county. | Limestone County |
| New Hope, Gurley, Owens Cross Roads, Triana, Ardmore, Elkmont, Lester, Mooresville | That town's own office | Check with the town | Town websites |
About the Huntsville permit fee. The city's general commercial building-permit fee is the total contract price times 0.0055, or $5.50 per $1,000 (City of Huntsville permit costs). That applies only when a building permit is needed. It's not the price of a door repair.
What about fire-rated doors?
Industry guidance based on NFPA 80 says rolling fire doors "shall be inspected and drop-tested not less than annually by a Trained Rolling Steel Fire Door Systems Technician." The same guidance says a door must be tested again after repairs (DASMA TDS 271, rev. 6/25). Your local fire official enforces what applies to your building. See rolling fire door repair for the office by location.
Describe the opening and the address, then ask the company which permit and license checks apply.

Planning maintenance instead of fixing a breakdown?
Planned maintenance is a scheduled visit to inspect and service equipment before it fails. It's not a repair call. Doors, levelers and restraints each need their own checks, and a fire door's yearly test is its own job.
- Commercial overhead and roll-up doors: commercial garage door maintenance
- Dock levelers: planned leveler service
- Seals, bumpers, restraints and dock lights: planned dock-equipment service
- Fire-rated rolling doors: inspection and drop testing
If a door is already down, it's a repair, not maintenance. Use the repair pages above.

Questions before you call
Do you handle commercial dock and door problems only?
Yes. This line is for loading-dock equipment and commercial building doors. Home garage doors, boat docks, trailer doors and storefront or glass entry doors aren't covered.
Can I call if I don't know what the equipment is called?
Yes. Say what you see and where it is. "Bay 3's door is stuck halfway" is enough to start.
Is Uptime the repair company?
No. Uptime Dock & Door is an independent commercial service-request website for loading-dock and commercial door repair. Your call may be shared with an independent repair company. That company confirms availability, scope, price and terms. Read more about Uptime.
How much does a loading dock repair cost in Huntsville?
It depends on the equipment, what failed, the parts and the access. We don't publish prices. Ask about the trip or diagnostic charge, the parts and the scope before you approve work. See what affects the price.
Do I need a permit to repair or replace a commercial door in Huntsville?
It depends on the job and the office that covers your address. Huntsville issues permits for alterations and repairs. Unincorporated Madison County says commercial work needs a permit regardless of cost. The company and the permit office confirm what applies. See the rulebook.
Does the county tell me which permit office I use?
No. Huntsville and Madison both cross into Limestone County, so city limits decide it. Check the parcel's city limits, or ask the company which office it will use.
What license should a dock or door company have in Alabama?
A general contractor license is required for covered work of $100,000 or more. Starting October 1, 2026, certain routine or regular maintenance and repair work may qualify for an exemption; the Board handles questions about specific projects. Electrical work on operators and controls falls under the Alabama Electrical Contractors Board. Inside Huntsville city limits, contractors also need a city business license.
What if I reach voicemail?
If you reach voicemail, leave the facility address, the door or dock number if known, what's wrong, and a callback number.
