Three doors that coil, and why the difference matters
A coiling door is one continuous curtain — interlocking steel slats, or a single sheet — that wraps around a barrel above the opening. No hinged panels, no overhead tracks running back into the building.
Three versions of that exist and they are not interchangeable:
- Ordinary rolling steel or coiling service doors. Warehouse openings, drive-ins, commercial self-storage units, shop doors. That's this page.

Repair or replace the rolling door?
Ask whether the curtain, guides and supporting assembly can be restored to the manufacturer's requirements, and whether compatible parts are available. Localized damage and a sound supporting assembly are different from damage spanning the curtain, guides and barrel. Compare the full repair scope with a replacement specification, including the opening's required ratings—not just the cheapest individual part.
Local rules that apply to rolling doors in Charlotte
The door type, building address and proposed changes determine which checks matter. A like-for-like repair and a new powered or rated assembly do not have identical scopes.
- Is it rated? If the door carries a fire-rating label, or shows up in the building's fire-door records, it has a different scope and a different enforcing official. - Permits on a replacement. N.C.G.S. § 160D-1110(c) provides a no-permit exception for work costing $40,000 or less in a commercial building that meets its conditions and names door replacement — with listed exceptions including load-bearing structural work. If the opening changes, ask the building official.
- Electrical. A powered operator on a coiling door raises the same question as any other: ask who handles new wiring under § 87-43 and whether a § 87-43.1 exception applies. There is no general low-price exemption.
- Code edition. The 2018 NC code suite, with the separate 2020 NC Electrical Code, remains the baseline; the 2024 code's effective date remains undetermined (NC OSFM).

What's the difference between a roll-up door and a sectional door?
A roll-up (or coiling) door is one curtain that wraps around a barrel above the opening. A sectional door is built from hinged panels that travel in tracks up and back into the building. Different parts, different failures, different repairs. A barrel or hood above the opening is an identification clue you may already recognize; you don't need to approach the door to check.
The curtain jumped out of the track. Can we just push it back?
Please don't. Impact, guide or curtain damage may be involved, and forcing it back can crease the curtain or wreck the guide — turning a guide repair into a curtain replacement. Keep people clear and call.
How do I know if mine is a fire-rated door?
A rated assembly normally carries a label, and it should appear in the building's fire-door records. If your records say it's rated, treat it as rated. Don't climb up to hunt for a label — say you're not sure, and the provider confirms on site.
