Cheektowaga is a town, and that changes three things
First, it is a Town, not a city. There is no City of Cheektowaga. It sits in Erie County, New York, and its own Building Department issues permits — 275 Alexander Avenue, (716) 686-3470, Monday to Friday 9:00 to 4:30, with applications taken until 4:00.
Second, the town licenses plumbers and HVAC contractors — not general contractors. So for commercial dock and door work here, there is no town contractor licence to ask for. And since New York State issues no statewide licence for this trade either, a "New York State licensed" claim describes something that does not exist. Your real screens here are the certificate of insurance, the building permit, and — for anything touching a door operator's wiring — the electrician's licence.
Third, permit fees are valuation-based: $10 per each $1,000 of construction value, per the town's own published schedule. The document does not state an effective date, so confirm the current figure when you apply. What that basis means in practice: the permit fee moves with the valuation your contractor declares. The village boundary that catches people here
Two villages cross into Cheektowaga, and the mailing address will not tell you which building department you are dealing with.
The Village of Depew straddles the Town of Lancaster and the Town of Cheektowaga. The New York State Department of State describes the split directly: the Town of Lancaster provides assessment-related services to the portion of the Village of Depew located within Lancaster, and Cheektowaga provides them to the portion within its own borders.
The Village of Williamsville is mostly in the Town of Amherst, with its southeastern corner extending into the Town of Cheektowaga — in the village's own words.
The Village of Sloan sits within Cheektowaga.
Why this matters on a door replacement: the permit office, the fee basis and the contractor-licensing requirement are all different between Cheektowaga, Lancaster and Amherst. Cheektowaga charges $10 per $1,000 of value. Lancaster charges per square foot and requires no contractor licence. Amherst charges a $500 base plus $18 per $1,000 and licenses only home improvement contractors, which by its own code definition is residential work.

The Town of Cheektowaga's own business page describes its economic base as including "innovative manufacturers, logistics operations, and retail/hospitality businesses," and calls the town's combination of "air, rail, and highway access" the reason it is "the Hub of the Niagara Frontier." It states that the town is "the home to this region's leading transportation hub, the Buffalo Niagara International Airport."
That last point is worth publishing because almost nobody gets it right: Buffalo Niagara International Airport is in Cheektowaga, not in the City of Buffalo. Which means an airport-area facility deals with the Town of Cheektowaga for permits, not Buffalo City Hall.
Erie County's published business-park inventory names sites across the county, including Airborne Business Park and Walden Commerce Exchange in Cheektowaga. Cheektowaga also hosts Gateway Trade Center, a named general-purpose site in Foreign-Trade Zone 23, which the Erie County IDA administers on behalf of Erie County.
