Is it a roll-up door, or another kind?
A roll-up door is a curtain of interlocking steel slats that coils around a drum (called a barrel) in a hood above the opening. People also call it a rolling steel door, a coiling door or a rolling service door. It rides up and down in two side channels called guides (DASMA TDS #277). Some doors that look like this are fire-rated or built for high speed, and those have their own pages.

Don't try to release spring tension, pull the curtain by hand, or cut anything loose. The barrel springs store a lot of force.

Many roll-up doors run on an electric operator mounted beside the hood. Others use a hand chain or crank. Repair the roll-up door, or replace it?
These factors usually decide it:
- How much is bent. A few slats can often be swapped. A curtain folded by a truck may not be worth saving.
- Springs and barrel. A worn-out barrel assembly on an old door can tip it toward replacement.
- Parts. Matching slats and parts for older doors can be hard.
- Use. A door that now runs many times a day may need a heavier door or a different type, such as a high-speed door.
