Which dock equipment needs attention?
Dock equipment is everything at the loading position besides the door and the leveler. It seals the trailer to the building, takes the hits, holds the trailer in place and tells drivers and dock workers when it's safe to move. Each piece has a different job, so it helps to know which one is acting up.

Dock seals and dock shelters
A dock seal is a set of foam pads covered in heavy fabric. The trailer backs into it and squeezes it tight. A dock shelter is a frame with side and top curtains that drape over the trailer instead of pressing against it. Both keep weather, heat or cold out of the building. At a cooler or freezer dock, they also help hold the temperature.
What goes wrong: trailers tear the covers, the foam gets crushed flat over time, head curtains rip, and frames get bent by off-center trucks. You'll see daylight around the trailer, feel drafts, or find snow and water inside the door.
Repair or replace? A torn cover or one curtain can often be replaced on its own. Crushed foam all around, or a bent frame, usually means a full replacement. Seals and shelters are often sized to the door and the trailers you run, so lead time can matter.
Dock bumpers
Dock bumpers are the blocks on the dock face below the door. They take the hit when a trailer backs in. When they wear down or go missing, the trailer hits the leveler, the dock wall and the door frame instead. That turns a cheap part into an expensive repair.
Report which bumpers are worn, cracked or gone, and whether the leveler or wall behind them looks damaged. This line is for service calls. It doesn't take orders for bumpers to be shipped to you as parts only.
Vehicle restraints and dock locks
A vehicle restraint, often called a dock lock, is a device at the dock face that holds the trailer so it can't pull away while forklifts go in and out. Some hook the trailer's rear bumper bar. Others block a wheel. Most work with red and green lights.
What OSHA actually requires, in plain words:
- The brakes on a highway truck must be set, and wheel chocks placed under the rear wheels, so it can't roll while forklifts board it (29 CFR 1910.178(k)(1)). A separate paragraph of the same rule repeats that brakes must be set and wheel blocks used during loading ((m)(7)).
- When people are on a dockboard, wheel chocks or sand shoes must keep the vehicle from moving (29 CFR 1910.26(d)).
OSHA's regulation names brakes and chocks; it doesn't require a powered restraint. OSHA's enforcement guidance allows a mechanical means of securing trucks or trailers when it provides equivalent protection to chocks. That depends on the device and the operation, so ask the provider and your safety lead about your setup. ANSI MH30.3-2022 is the performance standard for vehicle restraints (MHI; ANSI). Don't bypass an interlock or override the light system to keep a dock moving. Don't try to force a hook to release. Keep people clear, do not force the equipment, and follow your facility's established process for taking the affected bay or opening out of use.
Dock and communication lights
Swing-arm dock lights light up the inside of the trailer. Communication lights tell drivers when to back in or pull away. When lights fail or stick on one color, the whole dock routine breaks down. Report which dock, which light, and what color it's showing.
