A coiling door — also called a roll-up or rolling-steel door — is one that winds around a barrel above the opening instead of folding onto horizontal tracks. If yours does that, you are in the right place.

The parts of a rolling door, in plain words
Naming the part is not required. Mention only what is already visible from a safe place; some of these parts are enclosed.
- Curtain — the slats or the sheet that actually covers the opening. You would notice this if it were dented, bent, or pushed out of shape.
- Slats and interlocks — the individual horizontal pieces and how they hook together. Damage usually starts low, where forklifts are.
- Barrel — the roller above the opening that the curtain winds onto. Usually hidden inside the hood.
- Counterbalance springs — inside the barrel, offsetting the curtain's weight. They remain under tension during normal operation. Do not open the barrel or hood to inspect them.
- Guides — the vertical channels on each side that hold the curtain. Binding or crooked travel is a reason to have the guides and curtain inspected.
- Bottom bar — the heavier piece along the bottom edge that seals and locks. You would notice it bent or not meeting the floor.
- Hood — the cover over the barrel.
- Brackets — what the barrel mounts to at each end.
- Chain hoist or crank — how a manual door is operated.
- Operator — the motor on a powered door.
- Bottom-bar safety edge — a sensing strip on some powered doors that stops or reverses the door.

If it is fire-rated, it is a different job
A rolling fire door looks very much like an ordinary rolling steel door and is not maintained like one. It carries a rating label and a release mechanism designed to close the opening in a fire, and both repair and testing carry requirements a standard rolling door does not.
DASMA's technical data sheet on periodic inspection and drop testing calls for a trained rolling steel fire door systems technician, documented results and the manufacturer's instructions. An ordinary door service visit does not establish that the required fire-door inspection and testing were completed.

Repair or replace?
A curtain damaged in one area on an otherwise sound door usually points to a partial repair. A curtain built from a discontinued slat profile, repeated failures of the same component, or damage that reached the barrel and brackets point the other way. Which Sacramento checks matter for rolling door work?
Licensing. California's D-28 — Doors, Gates and Activating Devices Contractor classification covers installing, modifying or repairing commercial and industrial doors, including overhead and sliding assemblies. Verify any company with the Board's Check a License tool using its licence number. If the same visit also touches dock levelers, note that the Board's D-21 scope is the one that expressly names them.
Permits. Ask whether the proposed rolling-door repair, replacement, opening change or electrical work needs a permit. A forklift hit the curtain. Can the damaged slats be replaced, or is it a whole new curtain?
It depends on how many slats, where they sit in the curtain, whether that slat profile is still manufactured, and whether the guides, barrel or brackets took load as well. Partial curtain replacement is common on interlocking-slat doors. A continuous sheet door behaves differently. That assessment happens on site.
Is a roll-up door the same as a rolling steel door?
In everyday use, people mean the same thing — a door that coils above the opening. The useful distinction is in how it is built: an interlocking-slat rolling steel door and a continuous rolling sheet door are different constructions, with different parts and different repairs. Say which yours looks like, or just describe it.

A fire-rating label or known fire-release mechanism is a reason to have the provider confirm the assembly before work. A general product label or manual operator release alone does not establish a fire rating.
