Dock plate, dockboard, or installed leveler?
This is the one on this page worth reading properly, because the confusion is a safety problem rather than a vocabulary problem.
An installed leveler is fitted to the dock—a pit unit or an edge-of-dock unit. Manufacturers commonly distinguish dockboards rated for powered equipment from lighter dock plates for non-powered traffic. The actual device’s rating and intended use control; aluminum construction alone does not identify a plate or forbid forklift use.
For example, Bluff’s aluminum dockboards include forklift-rated models, while its aluminum dock plates are restricted to non-powered traffic. These are identification examples, not permission to use an unknown device.
OSHA §1910.21 defines dockboards to include bridge plates, dock plates and dock levelers; §1910.26 contains the requirements. MHI’s MH30 summaries distinguish equipment categories. Checked September 17, 2026.

What 1910.26 actually requires for dockboards put into initial service on or after January 17, 2017: they must be designed, constructed and maintained to prevent transfer vehicles running off the edge, with an exception where the employer demonstrates there's no run-off hazard. It also addresses securing portable dockboards in position (or ensuring enough contact to keep them from moving where securing is not feasible), taking measures such as wheel chocks or sand shoes against transport-vehicle movement while employees are on the dockboard, and handholds or other means for safe handling of portable dockboards.
Can a damaged plate or board be repaired?
Have it identified before anyone uses it again. That's the whole answer.
Do not assume a bent, cracked or gouged portable device can be welded, straightened or put back in service. Do not assume a plate is rated for a forklift — a plate built for a pallet jack does not become a forklift bridge because the forklift fits on it. Take the device out of use through your facility's normal process and describe the damage when you call.
What a qualified provider does: identify the actual device and its rating, assess the damage against what the manufacturer allows, and tell you whether it's repairable or whether it's scrap. We cannot establish safe reuse from a web description.
Dock seals and shelters
A conventional foam dock seal compresses against the backed-in trailer. A dock shelter uses a frame and curtains around it; inflatable designs also exist, so mention that type if known. Both close the gap around the trailer; they do it differently and they fail differently.
What goes wrong: fabric tears along the wear strips, head curtains rip where trailers hit them, foam loses its compression and stops sealing, backing boards rot or pull loose, and fasteners work out of the wall. Shelter frames bend when a driver comes in at an angle.
Why it's not cosmetic: you're paying to condition air that's going straight out the gap, weather gets into the dock, pests follow, and shredded fabric catches on the next trailer and tears further. Loose or damaged fabric can catch on a later trailer movement.
What to report: which bay, which side, and whether the damage is the pads, the head curtain, the frame or the mounting. If a trailer caught it, say so — it changes what gets inspected behind the fabric.
Dock bumpers
The rubber or laminated blocks bolted to the dock face. They exist to absorb the impact of a trailer backing in.
A crushed, missing or excessively worn bumper can leave the dock face and equipment exposed to trailer impact. Ask the provider to assess the bumper, mounting and any existing structural damage together; replacing the bumper does not repair damaged concrete.
What to report: which bay, whether the bumper is crushed, split, or gone entirely, and whether you can see damage to the concrete behind it. If the concrete is already going, say so — that's a separate trade, and the provider needs to know before they quote.
Not in scope: repairing the dock face, the pit walls or the slab. That's a concrete contractor. Replacing the bumper on sound concrete is in scope.
Dock lights, chocks and communication equipment
Dock lights — the arm-mounted lights that let a forklift operator see into a trailer — fail at the arm, the head, the switch and the wiring. Say which part if you know, and say whether it's the light or the power.
Wheel chocks are simple equipment but they're part of your dock's safety system, and OSHA 1910.26 names chocks or sand shoes as a means of keeping the transport vehicle from moving while employees are on the dockboard. If yours are damaged or missing, that's worth handling.
Communication lights and interlocks — the red/green systems inside and outside the bay — usually tie into the restraint system, so they're covered on the trailer and vehicle restraint page.
If new wiring is involved in any of this, CBC and CIC classifications by themselves do not cover electrical work (18VAC50-22-30, checked September 17, 2026). Ask who's handling that piece.
What to say when you call
Example wording for a first call. It's an example, not a script, and not a real job.
"The dock shelter at bay 3 in our Sandston warehouse is torn top to bottom on the left side, and I can give you the address."
Three steps after you call
- You describe it. Facility location, bay number, which component and what's wrong with it.
- Your request may be shared. Calls may be shared with an independent commercial dock-and-door repair company.
- That company takes it from there. They confirm whether they can serve the address, what they can do, when, and what they charge — plus their own contract, work and warranty terms.
Useful, not required
Bay number. Which component. Whether an impact caused it. Whether you can see damage to the concrete or the wall behind it. How many bays are affected — list each affected bay separately. Site access rules.
No completed checklist is required. The facility city or address, a bay number, and what's damaged are enough. Don't go measuring or pulling on anything to prepare.

What affects the price
We can't quote your exact dock equipment repair from a web page. The price depends on the component, the damage, parts, and access. Here's what to ask before you authorize work.
Ask whether the first visit is diagnostic or whether they're coming to do the work. Ask what happens if they pull the bumper and find the concrete behind it has gone — because on a crushed bumper, that's a real possibility and you want the plan in advance, not a surprise change order.

Repair, replace, or plan dock equipment maintenance?
Ask the provider to separate repairable fabric or individual pads from replacement of the complete seal or shelter. The backing, frame, mounting, trailer fit and available compatible parts matter; a fabric patch does not restore failed foam or a bent frame. For bumpers, ask whether the proposed replacement suits the docking arrangement and whether its supports are sound.
A portable plate or board needs a different decision: identification, rating, damage and manufacturer-approved repair options come before any return to use. Ask whether the assessment cost, replacement device and disposal are separate items. No weld or straightening proposal establishes load capacity by itself.
For loading dock equipment maintenance, give the company a bay-by-bay list of seals, shelters, bumpers, lights and portable devices. Ask for a model-appropriate inspection interval, a written defect list and separate authorization of corrective work. Keep leveler maintenance and restraint/interlock assessment explicit rather than assuming a door tune-up includes them.

What local checks apply to dock accessory work?
Tell the provider whether the proposal changes only a replaceable pad or bumper, its structural mounting, or electrical lighting and controls. A damaged wall or dock face needs its own structural scope; installing a bumper over failed concrete is not a complete repair.
Check the contractor’s actual scope and active licence through Virginia DPOR. The class thresholds consider project and annual value; the classification or specialty must cover the proposed work. CBC or CIC alone does not authorize electrical work.

Dock equipment questions
What's the difference between a dock plate and a dockboard?
Manufacturers commonly use dockboard for a portable device rated for powered equipment and dock plate for non-powered traffic. Names and materials are not a rating: some aluminum boards are designed for forklifts. Check the actual device’s identification, intended traffic and load limits. OSHA’s dockboard definition includes both and installed levelers; the MH30 standards distinguish equipment scopes.
Does a crushed dock bumper actually need replacing?
A bumper that no longer provides its intended protection needs assessment and appropriate replacement before the bay returns to normal use. The mounting and dock face also need checking. A new bumper does not fix existing concrete or leveler damage, and those scopes should be separated in the proposal.
Can a torn dock seal be patched?
Sometimes — a clean tear in a pad or a head curtain can often be repaired, and a single damaged pad can often be replaced without doing the whole seal. What decides it is where the tear is, whether the backing and mounting are sound, and how much compression the foam has left. If the foam has gone flat, patching the fabric doesn't get the seal back.
Our plate got bent by a forklift. Can it be straightened?
Don't assume so, and don't let anyone straighten or weld it without identifying the device and checking what the manufacturer allows. A portable bridge that's been bent has had a load event, and the damage you can see isn't necessarily all of it. Take it out of service and have it assessed.
