Is my town covered?

Facilities in Nassau and Suffolk counties can call. Together those two counties form the Nassau County–Suffolk County Metropolitan Division, the federal government's statistical area for Long Island outside New York City (BLS). That's a map, not a promise. The provider confirms each address.

One thing to know before you look for your town: on Long Island, your address decides which office handles permits. A hamlet — an unincorporated place like Hicksville or Hauppauge — is run by its town. An incorporated village runs its own building department. Nassau County has 2 cities, 3 towns, 64 incorporated villages and over 100 unincorporated areas (Nassau County). Suffolk has 10 towns (NY.gov).

Nassau County

Hicksville, Bethpage and Plainview

Unincorporated hamlets in the Town of Oyster Bay, along the Long Island Expressway (Town of Oyster Bay). Permits come from the Oyster Bay Building Division. See loading dock and overhead door repair in Hicksville.

Westbury and New Cassel

The Village of Westbury is in the Town of North Hempstead (Nassau County). Next to it, the New Cassel Industrial Area covers about 170 acres south of the Long Island Rail Road (NYS DOS). See loading dock and overhead door repair in Westbury.

Farmingdale (village)

The Village of Farmingdale is in the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau, right at the Suffolk line, and has its own Building Department (Nassau County, Village of Farmingdale). See Farmingdale.

Syosset, Woodbury, Jericho and Massapequa

Also Town of Oyster Bay hamlets (Town of Oyster Bay). Permits come from the Oyster Bay Building Division, through its eTRAKiT portal.

Garden City, Uniondale and central Hempstead

Uniondale is a hamlet in the Town of Hempstead. Garden City is an incorporated village with its own building department. Ask which applies to your address.

Inwood, Valley Stream and southwest Nassau

Mostly Town of Hempstead, with several incorporated villages. Give the full street address on the call.

Freeport, Oceanside and Baldwin

Freeport is an incorporated village. Oceanside and Baldwin are Town of Hempstead hamlets.

Port Washington and Carle Place

Town of North Hempstead communities. Unincorporated areas file through the town's MyToNH portal.

Glen Cove and Long Beach

Nassau's two cities run their own building departments.

Suffolk County

Hauppauge

The Hauppauge Industrial Park covers about 1,400 acres, mostly in southeast Smithtown, and continues into Islip (Suffolk County Planning Commission). Which town you're in changes your permit office. See Hauppauge.

East Farmingdale and Route 110

East Farmingdale is in the Town of Babylon, around Republic Airport and Route 110 (NYSDEC). See Farmingdale.

Melville and Huntington Station

Town of Huntington, along the north end of the Route 110 corridor (Regional Plan Association). The town code excuses ordinary repairs that replace existing work from permits (Huntington §87-14).

Deer Park, Lindenhurst, Amityville and Wyandanch

Town of Babylon. Amityville and Lindenhurst are incorporated villages. In the town, the commercial permit fee is tripled if work starts before the permit is filed (Babylon §89-19).

Bohemia, Ronkonkoma, Holbrook and the MacArthur Airport area

Bohemia and the airport are in the Town of Islip. Ronkonkoma spans Brookhaven, Islip and Smithtown; Holbrook spans Brookhaven and Islip. Check the street address before choosing a permit office (Suffolk County town codes). Islip's Foreign Trade Zone offers over 435,000 square feet of warehouse and office space next to Long Island MacArthur Airport (Town of Islip). Islip says no permit is needed to replace a door that fits the existing opening with no header or stud changes (Town of Islip).

Bay Shore, Brentwood, Edgewood and Central Islip

Also Town of Islip. Permits go through the town's Permits & Applications Portal.

Yaphank, Medford, Holtsville, Shirley and Patchogue

Yaphank, Medford and Shirley are in the Town of Brookhaven; Patchogue is an incorporated village. Holtsville spans Brookhaven and Islip, so check the street address (Suffolk County town codes). Brookhaven's Division of Fire Prevention inspects commercial buildings annually, every three years, or as needed (Brookhaven).

Riverhead and Calverton

Town of Riverhead, including the Calverton area. The town code excuses ordinary repairs that restore an existing part (Riverhead §217-6).

The East End

Southampton, East Hampton, Southold and Shelter Island, including the North and South Forks. Longer distances are reviewed case by case.

Outside this area

Facilities in Queens and Brooklyn are inside New York City, where different codes and permit offices apply. Call and say so, and the provider decides whether the job fits. Island addresses reached only by ferry are reviewed case by case.
