Richmond's industrial areas
Richmond's industry is shoreline industry, and that shapes the equipment.
The Port of Richmond runs three public terminals — Point Potrero Marine Terminal, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 — alongside nine privately owned facilities along the Santa Fe Channel within the port priority use area, according to a California Air Resources Board report dated March 2024 (CARB). The cargo mix is automobiles, dry and liquid bulk and break-bulk, which means auto processing buildings, bulk terminals, marine warehouses and refinery-support facilities rather than a wall of identical distribution docks.
Inland, the Richmond Parkway corridor is the city's industrial and distribution spine, attested in the state's environmental review record through projects such as the Richmond Parkway Commerce Center and the Honda Port of Entry (CEQAnet). That is where more conventional warehouse dock equipment sits.
Two practical consequences. First, shoreline exposure is hard on doors. Salt air accelerates corrosion on bottom bars, guides, tracks and hardware, and doors on waterfront buildings reach the end faster than the same door two miles inland. Corrosion through the skin or the bottom bar is one of the conditions that genuinely forces a replacement rather than a repair.
Second, port-adjacent and refinery-support buildings carry a lot of rolling-steel and rated openings rather than just sectional bay doors — so the fire-door and rolling-steel pages get more use from Richmond than from most of the East Bay.
Describe the building and the bay and we'll route it.
Local rules worth knowing
Two things about Richmond are genuinely different from the rest of this area, and both can cost you a wasted phone call.
First: North Richmond is not the City of Richmond. It is unincorporated Contra Costa County, even though the mailing address says Richmond. Permits, zoning and code enforcement there run through Contra Costa County Conservation and Development, not City Hall. The same is true of Rodeo, Crockett, Bay Point and the other unincorporated shoreline communities nearby. If your facility is in one of them, you are asking the county.
Second: Richmond's permit path is its own. Most East Bay cities run one widely used online permitting product; the City of Richmond's published route is a different system, branded under its own name. Start at the City of Richmond Building Division and confirm the current route when you call, rather than assuming whatever you used in Oakland or Hayward carries over.
This page does not decide whether your job needs a permit. Repair, like-for-like replacement, a changed opening, structural work and new electrical work are commonly treated differently, and the provider and the issuing office confirm what applies. On a rated opening it is also worth asking about fire-prevention review.
On the company: C-61/D-28 Doors, Gates and Activating Devices is the published classification scope covering commercial and industrial doors including overhead assemblies; C-61/D-21 Machinery and Pumps is the scope that names dock levelers. Check both under the exact signing name on the state license lookup. The full East Bay rulebook has the rest.
Common repair questions here
Our bay doors are rusting out near the waterfront. Repair or replace? Surface rust is a repair and a maintenance conversation. Corrosion that has gone through the skin or the bottom bar is one of the few conditions that genuinely forces a replacement. Ask the provider which one you have, in those words.
Is this door fire-rated? On port-adjacent and industrial buildings, quite often yes. There is usually a label on the curtain or hood and a release device, but a missing visible label does not prove a door is unrated. If there is doubt, say so and treat it as rated until someone qualified confirms otherwise — the fire door page explains what changes if it is.
We're in North Richmond — who do we call about a permit? Contra Costa County, not the City of Richmond. That one is worth checking before anyone applies for anything.
The dock leveler in a transload building won't hold under load. Stop using that bay and lead with it on the call. A leveler that will not hold is a load-bearing failure.
Do you cover the Santa Fe Channel facilities and the Parkway corridor? Yes — anywhere in Richmond, and across Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. The independent provider confirms the facility address and its own availability.
What happens when you call
- Call (385) 325-7138 and describe the problem. Facility location in Richmond, California first, then the bay number and what stopped working.
- Your call may be shared with an independent commercial dock-and-door repair company.
- That company — not Uptime — confirms availability, scope, pricing, scheduling, and its own contract, work and warranty terms.
Uptime Dock & Door is an independent commercial service-request website for loading-dock and commercial door repair. We route your call. We do not repair equipment, price work, or schedule visits.
Example wording, not a script and not a real job: "The dock leveler at bay 3 won't come up at our facility in Richmond, California, and I can give you the address."
If you reach voicemail, leave the facility address, the door or dock number if known, what's wrong, and a callback number.
You do not need a model number, a measurement or a photo. Keep people clear, don't force the equipment, and follow your facility's process for taking the bay out of use.
Address, bay, and what stopped is enough.
