A coiling door — roll-up, rolling steel, coiling, sheet door, all the same family — is a continuous curtain that winds around a barrel above the opening and runs in side guides. No hinged panels, no ceiling tracks.
If your door has hinged panels running in tracks, with standard-, high- or vertical-lift arrangements, that is a sectional overhead door. If it is a rapid-opening fabric or rigid high-speed system, that is a high-speed door. A fire-rated rolling door looks much like a standard rolling-steel door, but it is part of a fire-resistance-rated wall assembly. The rated assembly changes the repair, replacement and approval questions. Identify it from existing records and have the actual assembly and proposed work assessed.

N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7(c)1v treats qualifying same-opening door replacement as ordinary maintenance only within its dimensions, framing and egress-clearance conditions, and excludes opening protectives in fire-resistance-rated assemblies. Subsection (b) also excludes work affecting fire safety. New Jersey's Division of Fire Safety confirms adoption of the 2018 International Fire Code; that does not identify the requirements for an unknown door.

Is a roll-up door the same as a rolling-steel door? Same family. "Rolling steel" usually means interlocking steel slats; "roll-up" gets used for both those and lighter one-piece sheet doors. Either way the curtain coils around a barrel, which is what separates it from a sectional door.
Our door dropped on its own. What happens now? Stop using the opening, keep everyone clear, and take it out of service through your normal process. Unexpected movement needs assessment by a qualified provider; the symptom does not identify which component failed. Say "it dropped on its own" when you call — that changes how the job gets planned.
How do we tell whether ours is a fire-rated door? Use existing assembly records, a previous inspection report or building drawings. A thick wall or visible release device alone does not establish the rating. Do not approach damaged equipment to find a label; the qualified provider and responsible authority can confirm the actual opening.
Can a bent slat be replaced, or does the whole curtain go? Depends on the profile, how many slats are affected, and whether the door is rated. Ask whether a compatible slat repair is available and whether the guides, bottom bar or wider assembly are also affected. The provider must assess the actual door.
