What is a rolling fire door?
A rolling fire door looks like a regular roll-up door. The difference is inside. It's built, tested and labeled to close by itself during a fire, limiting fire spread through an opening in a rated wall. Smoke control is a separate rating to check on the specific assembly. It usually stays open during the day and is held by a release — often a fusible link (a small metal link that melts in heat) or a device tied to the fire alarm.
Because it only has one real job, and that job only happens in a fire, it has to be tested on purpose.
Who is your fire authority?
In Los Angeles County, the fire authority depends on the city your building is in. In the City of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) requires fire doors to be tested every year by an LAFD-certified tester. Long Beach, LA County Fire, the cities with their own fire departments and Orange County's fire agencies set their own expectations, so ask them.

What does the City of Los Angeles require?

A certified tester files the results electronically through The Compliance Engine within 7 days. Anything defective must be repaired and retested within 30 days of the first test. What is a drop test?
A drop test is when the door is released the way it would be in a fire, to prove it closes all the way on its own. Then it's reset and made ready again. DASMA, the door makers' association, says fire doors "shall" be inspected and drop-tested not less than once a year (Technical Data Sheet #271). After a repair, DASMA calls for two drop tests in a row that both work (TDS #2502).
A qualified tester runs the test. Nobody else should trip the release or try to reset the door.

Fire doors need approved parts. DASMA guidance generally calls for replacing the complete door when parts from its original manufacturer are unavailable. It also describes a limited exception for a labeled retrofit operator accepted by the fire authority (TDS #257). Parts availability, the door's label and the authority's approval can decide it. Ask the company how it will keep the door's rating after the work.
