A portable dock plate or dock board is a loose bridge. It gets moved into place, forklifts or carts roll over it, and then it's moved again. It's built for a set load, usually marked on a label. A bent, cracked, modified or unlabeled plate should come out of use until a qualified company looks at it. Sometimes the right answer is a new plate.
Why it's not simple:
- Capacity: it can't be judged by eye. It comes from the plate's label and its maker's records.
- Welding: a weld can change how a plate carries weight. Don't assume a welded plate can go back into service.
- Locking legs, curbs and handles: they're part of how the plate stays put and gets moved safely.
- The rules: California workplaces follow Cal/OSHA's Title 8, and its section 3337 is titled "Dock Plates and Loading Ramps." Ask the company which workplace rules it works to.

- "Can this plate be repaired to its original rating, or should it be replaced?"
