Elyria's building department licenses the person, not just the company
Elyria is the Lorain County seat, on the western edge of the Cleveland metro, with a long manufacturing history and the dock equipment to match. Its building department has two features worth knowing before you hire anyone (checked September 18, 2026, from the City of Elyria Building Department):
One. The department is certified by the Ohio Board of Building Standards for all Use Groups. That means plan examination, permits and inspections for commercial buildings happen here rather than being pushed to the state or elsewhere.
Two. Elyria licenses the individual, not only the company. A contractor licence here requires a $25,000 bond, a certificate of insurance naming the City of Elyria, a $125 fee, and letters of reference. The person doing the work has to hold it, which is a different bar from a company simply being registered.

Why do I keep seeing "Cleveland–Elyria" for this area?
That was the old name. Until July 2023 the metropolitan area was officially the Cleveland–Elyria, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. OMB Bulletin No. 23-01, issued July 21, 2023, renamed it the Cleveland, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area and added Ashtabula County to it (checked September 18, 2026). Elyria is still in the metro — it just no longer shares the billing.
