Dock seals and shelters
A dock seal presses foam pads against the trailer. A dock shelter surrounds the opening with a frame and curtains, so the trailer backs into it. When pads tear, foam goes flat, frames bend or curtains rip, rain, heat, bugs and cooled air get through the gap.
Signs it needs work
- The fabric cover is torn, and foam is showing.
- The pads are flattened and don't spring back.
- You can see daylight around a trailer at the top or sides.
- The shelter frame is bent after a trailer hit it.
- A curtain is torn or hanging loose.
- An inflatable shelter won't fill or has a tear.
Repair or replace?
A torn cover on sound foam can sometimes be replaced by itself. Flattened foam usually means new pads. A bent frame may be straightened or replaced. The company that takes the job looks at it and tells you which.
At a cold or air-conditioned dock, a gap lets cooled air out every time a trailer is loaded. Say if the dock serves a cooler, freezer or conditioned space.
Dock bumpers
Bumpers take the hit when a trailer backs in. When they're worn down, torn off or missing, trailers hit the dock face and the leveler instead. That turns a cheap part into a bigger repair.

When to report it
- A bumper is worn down close to its mounting.
- A bumper is missing or torn off.
- Bolts are loose, or the concrete around them is cracked.
- Trailers are hitting the wall or the leveler lip.
Anchoring bumpers into a damaged concrete dock face may need concrete work, which is outside this line. Call anyway. The company decides what the fix needs.
Dock lights
Dock lights shine into the trailer so workers can see. They're different from the red and green signal lights that tell drivers and forklift operators when it's safe; those are part of the trailer restraint system.
Report which lights are out and at which docks. If new wiring is needed, Florida law says a contractor "shall subcontract all electrical" work unless it holds the state electrical license (s. 489.113). Ask who does the wiring.
Wheel chocks and dock guards
Wheel chocks are blocks placed at the trailer's wheels. OSHA's forklift rule says "The brakes of highway trucks shall be set and wheel chocks placed under the rear wheels to prevent the trucks from rolling while they are boarded with powered industrial trucks" (29 CFR 1910.178). OSHA's dockboard rule says "Measures, such as wheel chocks or sand shoes, are used to prevent the transport vehicle from moving while employees are on the dockboard" (29 CFR 1910.26).
Dock guards and barriers keep people and forklifts from going off the dock edge when a door is open with no trailer. Report damaged or missing chocks, chock holders, guards and barriers. Your facility's own safety process decides how docks are used while they're being fixed.
Dock lifts
A dock lift is a platform that raises and lowers loads between the ground and the dock, or to a truck bed. It isn't a dock leveler, and it isn't the liftgate on the back of a truck. If a dock lift won't rise, won't lower, leaks or stops partway, keep people off it and away from underneath, then call. The company that takes the call confirms whether it handles that lift.
