Which parishes do you take calls for?
We take calls about commercial facilities in the seven parishes of the New Orleans–Metairie metro area: Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, Plaquemines, St. Charles, St. John the Baptist, and St. James. That list comes from the federal metro area update, OMB Bulletin 23-01 of July 2023 (BLS metro definitions). Louisiana has parishes instead of counties.

Orleans Parish
The whole parish is the City of New Orleans, so one city office handles permits everywhere in it — Uptown, the riverfront port area, Gentilly, New Orleans East, and Algiers on the West Bank. Inside the city, electrical work other than bulbs and fuses needs a city electrical permit, pulled only by a contractor with a city Class "A" electrical license (City of New Orleans). Metairie and the East Bank of Jefferson
Metairie, Elmwood, River Ridge, and Jefferson are unincorporated, so Jefferson Parish handles their permits, not the City of New Orleans. See loading dock and overhead door repair in Metairie.
Kenner
Kenner is its own city inside Jefferson Parish, with its own Inspection and Code Enforcement Department. The same street can change permit offices at the Kenner city line, so give the full address. See loading dock and overhead door repair in Kenner.
Harahan
Harahan is an incorporated city in Jefferson Parish, right next to Elmwood. Jefferson Parish lists its cities as separate from the unincorporated areas the parish office covers, and Elmwood is one of those unincorporated areas. If your building is near the Harahan–Elmwood edge, the address decides which office applies. Ask the company which office covers your building.
The West Bank
Across the river from New Orleans, Gretna and Westwego are cities with their own offices. Harvey, Marrero, Terrytown, Avondale, Waggaman, and Bridge City are unincorporated, so Jefferson Parish handles their permits. Algiers is on the West Bank too, but it's part of New Orleans. Jean Lafitte and Grand Isle are reviewed case by case. Say which side of the river you're on when you call.
St. Bernard Parish
Chalmette, Arabi, Meraux, and Violet are in St. Bernard Parish, downriver from New Orleans. The parish's Safety and Permits Division handles building permits and inspections there. See loading dock and overhead door repair in Chalmette.
Plaquemines Parish
Belle Chasse is the main commercial area close to New Orleans. The parish permits office is in Belle Chasse, and applications run through the parish's PPG Geaux online system (Plaquemines Parish). Facilities farther south, toward Port Sulphur, Buras, and Venice, are reviewed case by case. Give the full address and any gate or access rules.
St. Charles Parish
Luling, Destrehan, Hahnville, Boutte, Norco, and St. Rose sit along the river west of Kenner. St. Charles is one of the three parishes in the Port of South Louisiana's district (Port of South Louisiana). Give the full address, and say whether the site is inside a plant or terminal with its own check-in rules.
St. John the Baptist Parish: LaPlace and Reserve
LaPlace, Reserve, Garyville, and Edgard are in St. John the Baptist Parish, upriver from New Orleans. The parish's Permit Division, in the Government Building on West Airline Highway in LaPlace, handles commercial new construction, renovation, and trade permits (St. John the Baptist Parish).
The Port of South Louisiana covers St. Charles, St. John the Baptist, and St. James parishes, lists its office in Reserve, and runs the Globalplex Intermodal Terminal (Port of South Louisiana). If your building is inside a plant or terminal, mention gate check-in, safety orientation, or escort rules on the call. They affect scheduling. Distance up the river can matter too, so give the full address.

St. James Parish
St. James Parish, home to Gramercy, Lutcher, Convent, and Vacherie, is the farthest upriver parish in the metro, and calls there are reviewed case by case. For commercial construction or renovation, the parish's Office of Planning and Permitting asks for construction drawings and State Fire Marshal approval (St. James Parish). Ask the company whether your door job falls under that.
Outside the seven parishes
St. Tammany Parish on the North Shore — Slidell, Mandeville, Covington, and Lacombe — became its own metro area in the 2023 federal update (BLS metro definitions). North Shore facilities are reviewed case by case, and so are places like Houma and Hammond. Call and give the address.
