Counties and communities
Vanderburgh County, Indiana
Places: Evansville, Darmstadt, and the unincorporated county.
One joint city-county Building Commission handles building permits and contractor licenses for Evansville and the unincorporated county (County Code §15.08.090). If work that needs a permit starts before the permit is issued, the fee is tripled (Evansville Building Permits). In Darmstadt, confirm the permit office with the town.
Warrick County, Indiana
Places: Newburgh, Boonville, Chandler, Elberfeld, Lynnville, Tennyson.
- Boonville and the unincorporated county. Boonville issues only a zoning permit (Boonville ILP page). Building permits for Boonville and the unincorporated county come from the Warrick County Building Department. Commercial permits there need plans and a State Construction Design Release.
- Fees. The county lists a $100 commercial permit fee for "Exterior Remodeling: Re-roofing, windows, siding, doors, guttering, foundations, and the like" (County Code §150.17). The fee schedule took effect in 2003 and was amended in 2010. That's a permit fee, not a repair price. Confirm the current fee with the department.
- Newburgh. Newburgh has its own Building Commissioner. See the Newburgh page.
- The other towns. The Warrick County Area Plan Commission issues zoning permits for Elberfeld, Lynnville, Tennyson and the rest of the county. For Chandler, Elberfeld, Lynnville and Tennyson, confirm the building-permit office with the town.
Posey County, Indiana
Places: Mount Vernon, New Harmony, Poseyville, Cynthiana, Griffin.
Mount Vernon. The City of Mount Vernon has its own Building Commissioner, who "issues building permits and makes inspections" inside city limits. The Posey County Building Commissioner covers the unincorporated county, but not Mount Vernon, New Harmony, Poseyville or Griffin. Outside those towns, get the county's zoning permit (ILP) first, then apply through the county's online portal. In New Harmony, Poseyville and Griffin, confirm the permit office with the town.
Posey County is home to the Ports of Indiana–Mount Vernon. The port covers nearly 1,240 acres, with barge berths, a 53,000-square-foot transit shed, and rail links to four major railroads. The county's plants include a large plastics plant (SABIC Mount Vernon). If your building is at the port, or inside a plant with its own gate and check-in, say so when you call.
Henderson County, Kentucky
Places: Henderson, Corydon, Robards.
Kentucky's rules apply here. Kentucky licenses electrical work at the state level and has its own building code, fire code and safety agency. Inside Henderson city limits, the city's Office of Code Enforcement issues building permits. In the unincorporated county, the Henderson County Codes Department does. Which office issues permits where?
