My address says Bakersfield. Why would the county handle it?

Many facilities with a Bakersfield mailing address sit outside city limits, in unincorporated Kern County. For permits on a door replacement or a new opener, that means Kern County Public Works, Building Inspection, not the City of Bakersfield. Oildale, Rosedale and Lamont are common examples.

How to check. Kern County has a page for checking whether an address is in unincorporated Kern. You can also ask either building office, or ask the repair company to confirm when it quotes the job. Kern County takes permits online through its Accela portal.

North Kern: Wasco, McFarland and Buttonwillow

Facilities in Wasco, McFarland and Buttonwillow can call about dock and commercial door problems. Wasco and McFarland each have their own building office. Buttonwillow is unincorporated, so permits go through Kern County. Shafter has its own page.

Delano

Delano is the second principal city in the federal Bakersfield-Delano metro area. Facilities there can call about loading docks, dock doors, overhead and roll-up doors, levelers and dock equipment. South Valley: Arvin and Lamont

Arvin is an incorporated city with its own building office. Lamont, right next door, is unincorporated, so permits there go through Kern County. Two sites a few miles apart can have two different permit offices. Check your address before you ask.

West Side: Taft and Maricopa

Facilities in Taft and Maricopa can call. Both are incorporated cities. Taft has a Building Department. In Maricopa, ask the City of Maricopa about permits.

Tejon Ranch Commerce Center, Lebec and the Grapevine

The Tejon Ranch Commerce Center area on I-5 is in unincorporated Kern County, so building permits go through Kern County Public Works, Building Inspection. The same goes for Lebec and Frazier Park. For a replacement door at a mountain site, ask the repair company and the county whether snow, wind or other design needs apply.

Tehachapi

Tehachapi runs its own Building Department. It sits in the mountains between the valley and the desert. If you're replacing a door there, ask the installer and the city whether the new door needs a wind rating or other design check.

East Kern: Mojave, Rosamond, California City and Ridgecrest

Facilities in East Kern can call and describe the site. These are handled case by case, because they're a long drive from Bakersfield. Mojave and Rosamond are unincorporated, so permits go through Kern County. California City and Ridgecrest have their own building departments.
